Just joined in Frederick, MD - Bought XJ8 @ auction
Hello everyone. I just joined and would like to introduce myself. My name is Aaron.
I recently sold my '67 Mercedes Fintail at auction and returned home with a 1998 Jaguar XJ8 4.0 with just over 200K miles.
The Benz did not pull as much as I had hoped and the selection of other vehicles was weak. I bought the Jaguar based solely on the fact that it was in such clean condition that the parts value alone justified the $900 price (I think). Although, I do want it to drive.
It ran good on the ~30-mile trip back to Frederick, but I soon found that it has a few problems that I now know to be quite common from reading the posts here.
I am going to post a couple new threads with a couple specific questions that I have. It is currently flooded out and I haven't gotten it started yet. It took me a while to get the hood open after the one side wouldn't pop. This happened after it overheated on a short trip. Now that I have gotten the hood open, I have found some major air leaks in the intake and some tuning issues with the throttle body. The spark plugs are very fouled from rich-burning. Also, the digital display in the dash indicates "Transmission Fault" but there is no noticeable problem in how it shifts and drives.
Do you think I did ok for $900? The body and interior are near perfect and it has a brand new set of Michelin Z-rated tires. The tires alone would cost more than $900, but my original goal in selling the Benz was to get a cheap turn-key ride instead of another project.
Thanks!

Welcome to the forum Aaron,
Good to have you with us at Jaguar forums.
I can see you've already found your way to the X308 forum so there's no need for a link to it from me. The 'HOW TO' thread at the top is a good place to start for information on regular issues.
Please remember to add vehicle details to your Signature to help others to give relevant advice. Go to the User CP button on the left of the top menu bar, then Settings & Options under Your Control Panel. Select Edit Signature and enter the details.
You can also visit the US Mid Atlantic Region forum by following this link US Mid Atlantic - Jaguar Forums - Jaguar Enthusiasts Forum to find other members in your region.
Enjoy the forums.

Any car with 200K miles Will have some problems, especially if you bought it at auction. But for $900, as you say you could part it out and get that back easily. In this part of the world (Northern California) any car that runs is "worth" $1000 at least.

I figure a clean looking Jag would easily bring a thousand or more, even if it doesn't run, for someone to make a driveway ornament of it.
I want (and need) it to be a driveable car for me though.
Thanks for the welcome greetings everyone!
