I like the quad exhaust tips than the single oval kind of tips currently it has...IMHO Not yet ready to pull the trigger on complete exhaust set up like Mina.

Any tips or recommendations for the quad tips for a 2012 XF portfolio?

 

I put Mina on my XJR, XF and XFR. Good rumble and no issues.

 

I had my exhaust shop put quads on my old XFS.
It was waaaay cheaper buying off the shelf after-market tips and getting them attached to custom piping and mufflers (so I could bolt the stock set up back on any time I liked) than buying a bespoke set-up from someone like Mina or Quicksilver.

So ask around your local exhaust shop(s) and they should be able to figure out a decent deal for you.

 

Mina is on top of my list but will wait till my CPO warranty is over to avoid any issues dealer might bring up.

... so did you use exhaust shop mufflers as well? Any improvement/ difference in the sound? I'm much more into custom stuff than off the shelf. Almost always much cheaper too.

 

Yes, they were exhaust shop mufflers in a way. My exhaust bloke is a South African expat and he has a mate in SA who makes custom straight-through mufflers, so he got me a pair of them for not many $. All the tubing was custom made and bent on the spot.
The sound improved a bit, not a lot you can do with a diesel, a deeper burble at idle and a bit stronger roar at WOT.
I had much the same set-up (identical mufflers) put on the XFR but they were too loud and droney so I went back to stock, I still have them sitting in my garage if you want them, you would just need a couple of reducers to fit them to the 3.0D system, and the tips are quad 3.5" so they might be a tight fit.

The custom pipes are just the rear pipe to the mufflers? You reckon the routing between the XF and XFR is the same back to the jion (apart from the pipe diameter)?



The XFR and XF use the same rear standard oval outlets don't they? If so they should fit in.

Yep, just the rear pipes to the mufflers, where the clamps are just after the petrol tank.
I think the routing is exactly the same, going from memory having been under both the XFS and XFR heaps of times.
The XFR comes stock with 3" quads and different cut-outs to the XF diesel, that is why I think the 3.5" tips might be a tight fit. You may need to buy and fit an XFR valance (and diffuser) like I did before the tips will fit.
They cost me $500, you can have them for $200 plus postage.

Edit - I still have the original valance off my old XFS, and the exhaust tip cut-outs are approx 20 cm wide, which is plenty enough to fit the quad 3.5" tips (I just measured both the valance cut outs and the tips).

 

Cat back are the same on the NA and supercharger.

Hmmm. I just measured the cutouts for the ovals and they're 9.5 inches wide and 5.5 deep. Seems like plenty of room. I'll drop into the local exhaust shop about reducers and let you know.

Just one more question. I've read a lot of reports of fitting XFR systems to the 3.0D and most say that nothing, evem complete removal of the mufflers makes any more than a slight difference to the sound. That most of the muffling occurs within the turbo and the DPF.

Then there are sound recordings like the one below of the Spires 2 system that appear to make quite a big difference, and sound great.
This seems to run against the 'can't be improved' theory.
So how do they achieve results like this?

 

The stock XFR rear mufflers are still quite restrictive and do very little to "toughen" the exhaust sound of the 3.0D.
However, the after-market mufflers I had fitted are a lot less restrictive and very similar to the Spires shown in that video.
It's down to really opening up those rear mufflers to be true straight-through free-flowing mufflers.
That said, even with the after-market mufflers fitted the old XFS was very quiet at cruise, just a faint distant burble.

Under accelleration is good, and quiet in cruise mode is perfect.

- 2.25" ( 2 1/4 inch Inlet )
- 9 " ( inches long)

 

They should do nicely!
They also look to have a decent stagger, I could never find any 3.5" dual tips with enough stagger to align with the curve of the XF bumper.

 

I like them! They look very wide though....

Hi there,

i repkaced my stock rear rear boxes with the Spires dual tip boxes. The rear boxes are smaller than stock and now I can hear the throttle blip on downshifts and a nice growl on wide open throttle positions.

They were here not cheap but I am happy with the fit, finish and sound.

 

So I am showing my wife the difference between exhaust notes. She suggests that we place round speakers in the rear to make all the vroom noise we want.

 

Your wife is brilliant - BUT.....

You might want to explain the exhaust you really want is less expensive than the sound system to replicate the noise
