you have to look and check the USB charger some ate old 500mA spec and the newer ones conform to Iphone 2100mA spec and 1000mA those are the ones you want...
charge the phone just right and quickly...
The reason these USB chargers charge slower than mains chargers is because they contain circuitry that ensures the voltage and current conforms to USB specifications of 5V output, current limited to 500mA
Mains chargers will provide 5V at 1A, I believe some cigar lighter USB may be available that allow this also.
Later mains powered USB chargers for Snapdragon based Android phone will output 9V or even 12V and allow up to 2A current via negotiations with power supply circuitry in the phone that monitors phone battery temperature.

a mains and a car charger came with my iPhone and if I use a USB cable and a 2100mA charger it does take longer that using the car charger that came with the iPhone...
so I bought a 1 to 3 way 12v car thingy and that way I can charge my phone with the OEM car charger and the family can still charge their phones...
As has been already said some USB Adaptors are 500ma and other ones are 1000ma or more eg 2100ma.
I was using one of the Standard Type to Charge my phone on the move, while I was using it to play MP3's by means of using a Cassette Adapter (and it just about kept up)
Thats the Single one in the Photo but you can also get a double one that isn't that much bigger.
Single USB Cigar Lighter Adapter but you can get a double one of almost the same size.
But one Adapter is sometimes never enough to Charge all your devices and so I got this Triple one that Sits inside the Ashtray (if you take the plastic inner out) and tuck the excess cable underneath.
Triple USB Adapter Sits in the Ashtray and one of those has a USB Connection.
Take the Plastic inner out of the Ashtray, loosely coil up any excess Cable and put that in the Ashtray first with the Adapter sitting right on to of it (to keep things looking neat)
Its only a 500ma Socket but is it any good?

Note the Orange Charging Bar only goes half way.
This is the Standard USB Socket sold in many Car Accessory Shops.
But if you want the Real Deal, many modern Car Stereos have an Auxiliary Charging Socket of 1000ma.
Now look what happens when I Plug my Phone into the AUX Socket of my Car Stereo, which only cost about £17 on Amazon.
This time the Orange Charging Bar goes right over!
