Hi Dave
It looks like Cirrus Grey to me, as that was an 84 Colour.
If you open the Bonnet/Hood right on top of the Headlight Nacelle (passenger side on a UK Car) you should see a Sticker with the Paint Code on it.
Or you can Check it out here: XJS Data - Catalog - Colors - Jaguar XJS information, articles, photos and register

Naturally every year except 1984 is listed, but this should get you close:
???txt.title???
The scans of the chips are wildly inaccurate, about all they are good for is determining if a colour is red or blue for example.
If I had to guess, I's say your car is likely Savoy grey, code LED

Hi Daverb
If you have found the Trim Code the Chances are you may have also found the Paint Code as well.
As it would be unusual not to have the Paint Code on the Same Label, even if it looks nothing more than a few anonymous letters.
Have a look at the Paint Code on my Car, which is 'Dorchester Grey'
Though yours is much more likely to translate as 'Cirrus' which was an 84 Colour.
Paint Code and Trim Code Together on the Same Label
My Paint and Trim Code Label, are on the Top of the Headlamp Nacelle.

The moment that I saw your Car, I was thinking 'Dorchester Grey' except that wasn't around in 84
You really want that Colour Bang on. or it will be sticking out like a Sore Thumb, so I would try a Colour Match with Cirrus first.
And then go from there.
Cirrus Factory Code is ANC (Years: 84-85-86)

due to the fading like you said, that is why I am going to take it down to a body shop in town that I know has a scan tool to color match

That's what I thought I would do as soon as the weather decides what it is doing in this part of the county
