Saw tutorials on youtube for other brand keys but not our X-Type.
So, what happened is when I push the button to make the key blade flip open, nothing happens. I have to dig the key out from the side of the FOB because it won't "flip" out now. Seems like a spring issue happened. Anybody have the procedure on how to repair this issue or is something broke that needs replacing?
Any help appreciated ;-)
NOTE: From other key tutorials I have watched it seems like there might be a tiny screw under the button badge that holds the two halves together. Can this be confirmed before I go trying to pry that badge off only to find out it is not the same for our key. It is also my understanding there are 6 parts to this. The top plastic part, the bottom plastic part, a tiny screw, a spring, the key blade and the button. I think what has happened is that the screw under the button cover came loose somehow over time and then the spring lost it's tension as I can see play between the two halves. So if I have it right I just have to get it apart, line the spring back up correctly and pop the spring into the top half and twist 2 times to the left and then screw back down. Anyhow....not sure how close I am. Still looking for guidance before trying anything.

Try a little tuner cleaner to get the gunk out and then a little lube to make things work a little smoother.
The problem is getting it open Bud Tender. The spring tension has been lost so lube is not going to fix that. I can get the blade out to use, but it should "spring" out when I press the button like a switch blade and it is not doing that anymore.
Okay, either spring or pocket lint accumulation. When you pull the key out is there much resistance?
Exactly like a modern automatic knife. I have several parts knives around if you do need a new spring.
Hi all, while on the topic of keys has anyone seen this key holder before. This is the only keys I have for my 87 XJ6 VDP and need to make some extras. Would like to find the same key holder for the spare keys.
Hi guys...thanks for the input but those examples are not the same - and the key button is on the side on those...not on top like our X-Type key FOB is. This following tutorial is about probably the closest thing to it I could find, and is pretty straight forward. I just don't want to pop off the jag badge until someone can confirm there is a screw under there:
Update - I got it open. I practiced on a spare I had bought off ebay a while back so I now know the inner workings of the blade part and how to take it apart and put it together. Now to try it on the main unit. Will post an update and procedure later.

My spare key was sticking, giving the impression the spring was weak.
The spring was fine, it was the split pin/tube that was slightly sticking out one side, causing the problem, it is easy to overlook.

Yes...I had it figured out a while back and got it back together and working and it has worked ever since. I plan on making a video of the procedure soon ;-)

I'm having rouble taking it apart, did you manage to make a video dude?
Step 1, separate the top and bottom half of the key.
Step 2, use flat screwdriver to pry gently at the key blade
Step 3, once you have pried it up 1/4 inch or so you should be able to pull the clamshell halves apart
Step 4, spend 10 minutes looking for that little spring that flew across the room when you opened it.
The red circles show the location of the 2 plastic nibs that hold the key together

This helps alot dude thanks, tried this but seems like it's glued together, might just cut it as I'm replacing the whole casing anyway
Be careful around the transponder chip. It is in a glass tube so probably fragile. I assume breaking that little piece of glass results in an expensive trip to the dealer or the locksmith.
Yes, breaking the tube is high on the list of Bad Things. It's a microcircuit in a glass tube, what could go wrong? Break it and it usually stops working.
They can usually be removed with a little gentle work with an X-Acto knife. Watch especially for any type of adhesive (some have it, some don't).
If you have a CLONE transponder, however, that is likely to be a plastic-encased chip, far less likely to hurt it.
