In my 2007 XK boot, the spare tire removable panel has long chrome strips giving it a very classy retro look. However, I noticed on eBay a 2014 XK that does not have them. Was this an option? Or did Jaguar just stop offering it at one point? 2014 Jaguar XK Touring Coupe RWD | eBay

It's funny, they are called carpet protectors. They are there so your expensive luggage doesn't dig into the carpet and vice versus. I think they look classy but how I drive the stuff in the back ends up piled in a corner regardless.
The luggage rails are definitely a nod to the E-type (see pic below). Ian Callum also wanted another retro touch with a side-hinged hatch like the E-type, but management wouldn't go for it.
I didn't know there were any XK's without the luggage rails. After your post, I went looking through a ton of photos and it appears 2014/2015 XK/XKR's did not have the rails. Every picture I found of 2007-2013 XK/XKR's shows the rails. Thanks for bringing this up, michaeldonnell123. I never noticed this until you pointed it out!
I personally love the look with the rails and find it to be a bit plain and ordinary without them. However, I suspect many people add a luggage liner or some kind, rendering the rails unnecessary.
