308 XJ8L Transmission failure with no warning
Hi guys,
Well I have a 1998 XJ8L non SC with 133,000 miles on it. The motor was replaced due to grenade due to tensioner failure. The newer motor nearly did the same and I bought it and changed the tensioners and water pump. If is not the greatest motor which pushes oil in to airbox when pushed. (I cleaned the part load breather fitting in the valve cover and replaced both breather hoses). The car has run great and the transmission smooth and no problems at all.
Tonight coming home with dinner I stopped to turn onto my street (500 yards from home) and when I gave it gas there was a shudder and then trans failure light. The car made the turn but not great. Coasting turned off the key in neutral and restarted it and light went off but no better. Light came back on when pushing the gas. Coasted to drive way and would keep moving but not right. Put it in reverse to check that and the engine reved and banged into gear. Lurched back and then slush movement. Same forward and slips almost immediately. Does not and never has banged shifting into drive.
There was no fluid leak. Engine runs fine.
I have a 1998 VDP that has an A drum failure and loss of 2nd (loss of 2nd was from dead battery. Always check the battery!!). I know how that car behaves and behaved before failure. This is NOTHING like that.
I know I need the codes but not sure if my Father took the code reader with him on vacation. Can not drive the car to trans shop.
Any ideas. Sorry so long winded. Do the pumps ever fail on these. It is acting like low on fluid (but WAY to sudden).

So many similar things can go wrong with a trans and be something else and vise versa. I am a stickler for simplicity for initial evaluation. Drop the pan, check the filter and fluid condition and look in the pan for excess filings or god forbid, ...parts. I believe member Daim just rebuilt his. Did you fix the A drum on your 98 yourself? If not, here's a video on that....
...he has done tranny's before, just not Jags, so his take down and discovery isn't overly technical. He brakes it down quite a bit of the way.

Also, look at this link, its at the top of this Forum... https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/x...k-links-20090/ ...Jim put a lot of effort into it to save members time on repairs and such by gathering this information. Just scroll down in his first post and you'll come across Transmission with multiple sub threads and further down more transmission repair and maintenance.

Re: Tranny problem
Thanks guys for the helpful info. Crazy thing is that my back up vehicle is a 2003 Dodge Durango. I pulled out of the field (there's your problem right there) and 185,000 mile front hard brake line went out 2 miles from home. So limped it home and replaced the lines but having trouble bleeding it for some reason. So, when I get that sorted so I can go to work I will put the jag in the shop and drip the pan. It seems that the High pressure thing might have goofed the tranny up. Not sure but will keep posted. Got the codes and there was only one. It was 2nd gear ratio out of range (something to that effect). I don't have the actual number with me right now. Anyway, thank you guys!

Hi Walter,
Just a reminder that it is helpful to add the year, model and engine of your Jaguar to your signature line so we don't have to go all the way back to your original post to be reminded of this critical info.
P1111 is actually a good code because it indicates that the system readiness tests ("SRTs," mostly associated with emissions) have been completed successfully.
P1722 is a transmission-specific code. Here is the listing from the Transmission Diagnostic Trouble Codes Summaries guide:
Note that the number one cause of P1722 is low transmission fluid, followed by a problem with the gear selector cable. I know you checked for fluid leaks already, but it would be worth a second look, inspecting not only the transmission pan, bell housing and gearbox output flange seal, but also the fluid cooler lines and cooler. Then check carefully to ensure the gear selector cable mechanism on the left side of the gearbox is still properly secured with no visible problems. The screws & nuts that secure the cable bracket to the side of the gearbox have been known to fall out, and if your cable has an "L" shaped end with a ball joint, the ***** have been known to pop out of the socket (I recently repaired an X300 with this problem):
Also, while you're under the car, clean the gearbox electrical connector with zero-residue electrical contact cleaner spray.
If none of those actions resolves the issue, I would recommend that you check the transmission fluid level following the procedure outlined in the attached documents.
Cheers,
Don
