Unlucky - antenna mast failure is regular but motor failure is unusual.

Antenna birdstrike
Hello,
I recently had an antenna bird strike - at least that is what I think it was. I was driving back home in the dark so didn't see anything, but there were feathers on what was left of the antenna.
Dogs aren't looking too impressed with that either. Anyway, I found a great piece by JagRepair.com that told me how to get the thing out and take it apart. I bought a new antenna from Raderra through eBay - total cost US$34.98. When I took the unit apart it was filthy inside. I had to use a lot of WD40 to clean the thing up.
All those white and opaque pieces of plastic were basically black when I took it apart. Getting the new antenna in was relatively straight forward except for the plastic toothed strip that drives the antenna itself. That took a lot of messing about to get it installed correctly - it's very whippy. Also getting the antenna unit in and out of the car is awkward - just by virtue of where it is. But I got it done - works fine now.

I think I'll probably need to fix the antenna on my newly acquired 2003 XK8. Looking on the Barrett website I see that the mast is sold separate at $50 as opposed to $350 for the full unit. Anybody know how easy it is to change just the mast? Looks like a screw in for the mast itself but the 'Morse' style cable look a bit more tricky.

First, $50 for the mast is excessive.
Get it here for $12.50 including shipping
Once you get it all you have to do is unscrew the retaining nut on the top of the rubber grommet then power on the radio so whats left of the old antenna is extended as much as possible. Then just gently pull the antenna until the plastic track comes out. Last you feed the new track in then power off radio and the new antenna should retract and sync up on its own.
Above is from memory I did it a couple years ago. There were instructions on the site somewhere that I followed.
I also replaced the rubber grommet since I had the retainer off and the rubber was 13 years old. Did not want a leak into the trunk later on.
Part number is C2N3698 I think it cost me more than the antenna.
