Hi vdp lover,

One long edge of the lamp assembly has molded-in plastic clips that seat over the edge of the cutout in the bumper cover, the other long edge has two spring clips. It's designed so you can slide the lamp toward the edge with the spring clips and unhook the side with the molded-in clips. But what often happens is that the end of one or both of the spring clips slips up on the inside of the bumper cover and snags the lamp so it won't remove the proper way. In that case it's easiest to just apply a couple of layers of masking or painter's tape to the surrounding area and use a plastic pry tool, putty knife, wide flat screwdriver, etc. to gently pry the lamp out. If the spring clips get bent in the process you can just bend them back into shape.

Note that as you are withdrawing the lamp, slide it toward the wider end of the opening in the bumper cover so the electrical connector can clear.

Don't be surprised if the bulb socket is badly corroded. If the lamp is in good condition, you can just replace the socket with Volkswagon part number 1H0 -949-111 or 1H0949111 from eBay, vwpartsnation.comand other sources for less than half the cost of the complete lamp assembly from an online Jaguar dealer such as jaguarmerriamparts.com or gaudinjaguarparts.com.

Cheers,

Don

1. Check your owner's manual for "Bulb Replacement." I just did F and R (all 4) on my 2003 XJR. Front; Orange, oval in bumper:Rear; Red in bumper, opposite orientation.
2. Place thumb or forefinger in FRONT curvature of lens. (Section is different/darker than rest of lens.) PUSH and front will go IN, rear will pop OUT toward you. Small, simple "clip" at rear needs to be "pried" forward so that its "shoulder" clears rear of opening in bumper. I used a plastic "detailing" Q-tip. A small screwdriver will work, but be careful. Don't need to "pry," just kinda move visible part of clip "forward." Wiggle assbly until it fits thru opening. Turn bulb housing CCW to remove; change bulb and reverse. (Rear, Red and oriented opposite from front. That is, "dark" section points to Rear of car. Push IN, front pops OUT, push spring clip, remove, CCW to remove bulb housing, change and reverse. Be patient ! It is tricky until you do it once, then "easy peasy.)

Hi trottier.ed,

Good tip on checking the owner's manual. The OP's car is an '07 X350.... If your '03 XJR is an X308, the lamps are a different design. The X308 lamps have one spring clip on one end, while the X350 lamps have two spring clips along one long edge.

Here's the section from the X350 Driver's Handbook on the official technique for removing the sidemarker lamps. The spring clips are not shown in the illustrations. I posted photos in another thread, but unfortunately they fell victim to Photobucket's nonsense and I haven't had time to reload them. In my experience, one or both spring clips slips up behind the bumper cover and won't release in the intended way, requiring one to pry the lamp out.

For comparison, here is the section on sidemarker bulb replacement from the X308 Vehicle Care Handbook. Note the instruction to use a flat-
bladed screwdriver to compress the spring!

Cheers,

Don
