Good choice. I think other than the LED lighting in the cabin there really isn't a comparison between them.

They are not apples to apples cars.

I started with recent Jaguar's by looking at the F-type, and ended up in the X150 camp instead.

The F-type is more along the lines of a Corvette.

An F type is an expensive FRS or pointy Miata. The X150 is more proportional to a vette than the F type is.

The XKR is very far away from Corvette.

The F is similar to the Corvette - my test drive in a F V8 AWD gave me a lot of memorys to my 11 Corvette years.

I drove 1 C5 and 4 C6 and now for more than 3 years the XKR.

Corvette ist a sports car - XKR is a GT

Yes, comparing anything to a miata is basically saying "Yep, that sucks too".

The first generation Miata is actually a marvel, when you compare it to what came before; it was a serious game changer. In a period when the world was shifting to automatic FWD econo boxes; it let you drop the roof, have a manual transmission, and rear wheel drive.

It was a herald of a return of fun exciting cars from large scale manufacturers. I think fondly of the Miata. A car like it hadn't really been in production since the 1960's.

What about the Triumph Spitfire or MGB? Both of those were made until 1980.

that's funny ^^

I'm not a fan but I have a few friends that love their Miatas. That and the Subaru BRZ are cool little cars to throw around if you're into that kind of thing.

Good for you (I guess ) Michael O. I love the F-Type but it is also not for me. Maybe consider trading up to a 2014 XK/XKR ??

Real mother to drop a 5.0 Ford in one of those little cars.

The funny thing, is that the Miata has become the go to sports car. They are a very common choice for people wanting get into motorsport. How many people compete with their "modern Jaguar sportscar"? Not many... Yet Miata's go racing, and thus, are true sportscars.

Yes Miata is a true sports car, it could be argued that even more than my 500Hp car. Its about balance and sporty agility. Its a category on itself, not unlike rotary engines. Yep Mazda bought the category out of the world of boutique car manufacturers and made a reliable mainstream (think Alfa Spyder- many committed suicide as result of that)

Spyder speeders are not for me. I get the whole thing about combining a motorcycle and sidecar in one package and adding another wheel. But I want authority, I want to put unburnt fumes in the face of that Lilliputian that wants to out maneuver me.

One other thing, unless money is no issue, depreciation for these later model Jaguars including the F Type is horrific and unless you are planning on keeping the car for any length of time, be prepared to see a significant drop in value in a very short period of time. I purchased my car at less than 50% of it's MSRP 3 years ago, and it's still dropping as we speak. I'm not planning on selling and it will probably go to my kids so not a big deal, but Jaguars (other than XKEs) are not the best investments. Still ....fun fun cars!
Agreed. The XK seems richer and more of a cause for celebration.

I have to say I wasnt very impressed with my first test drive of an F Type base. While I thought the steering and transmission were awesome, the interior was a bit plain, the seat was uncomfortable, and in a 'vert with the top down the engine noise was a bit over the top for me. I got back into the XKR with almost a feeling of relief, especially for my **** and lower back which were actually sore after 2 hours on the road.

Fast forward 2 years and I got bitten by the bug again, this time for the coupe in a V6S. What a difference the spec made, it was quite lovely inside and the performance seats pretty comfortable, with a much improved media system and (shock horror for a Jag) a stereo that you can actually tolerate listening to, at least once you tire of the engine noise (which is never). So I bought it.

It is a vastly different car to the XKR - in some ways better, in some ways not as good. The seats have softened up so the ride is pretty much at the level of the XKR on 20's. The steering and transmission are better, even though I'd had doubts about the utility of an 8 speed for spirited driving. The tech and nav are better. The wheel feels great. It doesnt have the utility of the XK shape though it isnt terrible. There is plenty of room in the boot area - as long as you go without the spare. It is certainly much harder to get in and out of. Neither the V8 nor the V6 sound as good as the 4.2 in the pre-2009 XK's IMO, though the engine noise is much more audible to the driver, and it does sound wicked under the hammer. It isnt quite as luxurious inside.

I've driven the XKR (5.0) and the F Type on the track, the F type in both the V8 and the V6S. The V6S is an absolute joy on the track for someone with perhaps average skills like me. I could never get the power down in the XKR and the F Type R felt too heavy in the front for my liking, and possibly a bit too much grunt for my mediocre at best talents. The XKR on the track drives pretty much the same as the new XJR, IMO, though the XJR tends to have more grip possibly with more weight in the back.

I think it'd be fun to have one; but at the end of the day, when I walk out and look back at the car I want to see the beautiful flowing lines of a coupe.

While it might not be my first choice of automobile, I think what has been achieved with the car is quite remarkable. Mazda has capitalized on it very well by branding themselves as a maker of not just cars, but fun cars.

I see looking down on a Miata from a Jaguar from the perspective of horsepower as little different than a truck driver looking down on a Jaguar from perspective of the Jaguar perhaps not towing a 40' trailer.

I'd consider placing it up for auction with a large auction house. Mecum or Barrett Jackson perhaps. Pretty sure that as soon as you consign you will be free and clear. You may take a hit on the commission (typically 10% for reserve) but this might be the best place for this type of car and you should be able to find on regionally. Buyers looking for these types of cars will be in attendance.

I plan on taking my 08 XKR to Barrett Jackson Northeast in June 2018. Probably list it on ebay and car gurus starting in January.

Original? Sure. Modern MX-5? No way, there is simply no excuse for how under powered it is and how heavy it is. True, you don't need power in an ultra-light car, but MX-5 is 1050kg and only 160HP.

The reason people race them is because they are a) very cheap b) easy to mod c) balanced and have chassis that can take mods.

So if you want to race on the cheap, get used one, put in cage, shave head, and swap in aggressive cam and you are good to go with minimum investment. If you crash it, toss it out and buy another one from a change in the swear jar. However, driving one you get eaten alive on the track by real sports cars (that also cost more). If you manage to pass someone on the track in Miata, and they didn't just lost a rod, it is because you are through and through a better driver.

Today is the good old days of ICE, there is simply no excuse to show up with less than 200HP. It is plain-simple bean-counting cost cutting. Mazda accountants decided that bald pudgy guys of ambiguous sexuality simply don't tend to take MX-5 to the track in sufficient numbers to spend any money on making this car suitable for such task.
