Smile Wheel Sensors

Have a question regarding wheel sensors on a 1997 X300. A friend has a 97 X300 and his check engine light is ON all the time. He took it to a local mechanic, who I highly respect, and was told the Ck Lt being on is due to the wheel sensors not functioning properly. I just want to know if this analysis is correct. And if it is what is involved in servicing the wheel sensors. My 95 has never had a problem with wheel sensors that I know of for the 14 years that I have owned it.

Thanks guys for the help

Cleaning them is first step. Brake clean and a rag.

Front will come out. Rears probably wont but you can reach into rear upright.

Clean plugs and check wires too.

Wheel sensor issues will not set the Engine Mgmt Light but they will set the ABS light. Is it definitely the Engine Mgmt Light that is on?

Agreed with b1mcp. Are there any other symptoms other than the Check Engine Light? What diagnostic tools did the mechanic use?

That is what I wanted to know. I wasn't sure if the ABS fault would set the check engine light or not. As far as I know the mechanic use a very good scan computer. I will go at it soon with my scanner. At least I can turn the light off and see if it returns. On my XK8 the ABS shows up on the center of the panel. Is it the same on the X300.

Thanks guy

The ABS /TC will not reset until the car reaches 12.5 MPH and the X300 " ANTI - LOCK " and " TRAC OFF " fault light is in the pic below :

On the X300 the ABS (Anti-lock), Traction Control and Check Engine Lights are all on the left side of the panel. A modern scanner is unlikely to able to detect the fault codes of Jaguars of the 1995-1997 cohort accurately.

Any OBDII-compliant device should read the code or codes responsible for the Check Eng. illumination.

WDS or other specialized equipment is required to read the other modules, responsible for Anti-Lock and such fault lights.

Anti lock codes wont come up on a simple OBD scanner as far as I know, cheapest option for these is the Delphi diagnostic scanner from eBay. You can get these for ~$50 from eBay.
