Howdy y'all..been reading and enjoying. But today I've spent too much time looking for what I need to know about this swap. I saw the removal of the cylinder..but need to know about the plastic column covers. I read indelicacy can break tabs but not where they are or the best way to go about it. Also there was some question about the key reader and swapping just the cylinder. I can't find a simple illustration and don't want to proceed blind. At least not today.. and thanks for your time..
You've already posted an Intro so I've moved your question from New Member Area - Intro a MUST to X308 forum. Members here with the same model will be able to help.
Just to clarify - you want to remove the rectangular black plastic coil covers on the camshaft covers to swap ignition coils?
I think he's speaking of the key ignition cylinder Graham....or at least that's how it reads to me? I'm not home now, but if I recall, its just 2 screws from underneath. As for the cylinder:

1. Turn ignition key to position one.
2. Release the retaining tang.
3. Remove the ignition switch lock cylinder.

Yes, Highhorse..I was refering to the steering column covers and ignition cylinder. But Thank you Graham for sending me in the right direction. I need more practice at navigation here. Soo, is it true then, that there will be no issue from the swapped key and cylinder with regards to the key reading system? And thankyou for the illustrations..they are now archived in my jag notebook.
I saw this video..thanks. On application there was alot in the way. I created a new tool so I wouldn't take so much apart.. Sadly the car fired up once..and then back to square one. After this snow will test the crank shaft sensor. All ready checked the inertia switch..its good. My gut says contact is not being accomplished so probably start following contact points from ignition to starter..thanks for the help!
I have attached the cowel removal instructions from the workshop manual. They are no difficult to remove. From the sounds of your problem you may have a wire that is broken loose from the ignition switch connector plug.
The cowel is held together by 2 screws and the knobs for seat and dimmer just pull off.
Once the 2 screws are removed you need to lower the column to full down and it has to be at full extend. Some years have 2 bolts at the back of the upper cowel that can be removed once the column is fully down position. Generally the 2 cowels just separate after the screws are removed.
Are you sure your key module is in serviceable condition ML? Has the key ever been washed accidentally or such? Do you have another key to check it with?
