Cooling fan issues
Just a quick question I'm working thru. a Fan issue and am wondering what the item is mounted between the 2fans towards the bottom of the cowling assembly.
SNGB does not show anything there on the exploded parts pic.
Pulling that all out later to check Moters.
Thanks for any info

There isn't a separate box on the fan shroud. What you are probably seeing is the area where the high and low speed connectors are plugged in. To remove the shroud you have to raise the vehicle and unplug the high and low speed power cables and un-clip them from the shroud and you will find a tube mounted to the shroud bottom that has to be un-clipped then remove the 2 upper bolts and lift the shroud assembly out. The bottom just has two tabs that sit in a register.

Ups my mistake part is not attached to fan Assy.
But from my reading of many previous posts, this 01 does not have variable speed fans.
Later xk8 did.thanks for info going to pull Assy and test Moters to make sure both are ok then look at AC control relay.
I guess I should say what my issue is, only one fan (passenger side ) is active and then only when temp reaches 210F, turning on AC does not activate either fan, posts say fans should both come on immediately. So will start at Moters then check control relay, thermostat was recently replaced and using obd reader is sending info that appears correct.
The worrying thing is the fact AC doesn't start either fan.
Will report findings tomorrow as today house full of Easter egg hunters😀

Very quickly on the 2001 XK8 the coolant temp control for the 2 fans is by a thermistor temp sensor that has a opposite reaction to pulling the temp sensor connector . In pulling it sees a high resistance which simulates cold so the fans stay off . In putting a jumper wire with a very small resistor in the connector it sees low resistance so it simulates hot and both fans turn on .
On the A/C cooling mode in turning the A/C should give you low speed plus high in jumping pins X and Y for high A/C demand .
You can pull the coolant temp sensor and it will read the value of Z resistance in ice water ( 32 F )
A dirty connector cleaning is a good idea anyway . Check and clean your relay control ground at point LF2AR
On my X300 the fan control module was full of water and corroded when cut open and beyond repair . Just at the salvage yard and picked up one ( LJA 6702 A ) for $ 10 dollars . There is a second one if needed just pay $ 10 + shipping . I'll test it first

On the X300 and X308 relay module , it is located away from the other single relay groups and is under the car Fwd of the left tire . Since on the X100 relay groups it's not listed it may also be in this location . Look at it's part number on the top of this tall black relay module for later . If you can figure out that bowl of spaghetti in that relay module you will get it to click in putting a 9 volt battery on the pulling coils at point 8 and 9 then 8 and 7 but the power contacts may be damaged and not allowing enough current to run the fan . And when you go 8 to 7 there should be 2 clinks at the same time and you can't discern that you're missing one unless you put a meter on the power contact pins . You can swap the right fan connector to the left fan connector to verify the fans work .

Thanks again folks finally got the fan Assy removed, only cut myself once and left (drivers side) moter ng so ordered that moter and I found the relay looked a little beat, I measured across the diodes they seemed ok, cleaned contacts on male and female reassembled. It acted a little weird.
When I started engine cold, passenger side came on after about 30 sec ran for about 20 sec then shut off, never done that before so while it's all apart I'll replace that relay too.
Won't get fan till Thursday and relay on Saturday.
Will let you know how it all works out.
At least I'm not stuck at home with 5 inches or more snow, sitting outside in sunny Myrtle Beach

Ok well parts arrived yesterday, installed replacement fan moter,(FYI if you replace a fan moter get it with the blade attached, it was a pain in the a## to get off ) installed replacement fan relay, refilled coolant and bled system. Ran cooler on Hwy,probobly because of new coolant, but fans are still not kicking on with AC. And now didn't see fans active when I allowed temp to get to 215f parked.
Going to leave it alone for now as engine running well while at Hwy speeds, will get me home from Myrtle beach in a few days. I suppose I should test the AC relay mod that I replaced, other than that I may be looking at a ECM issue,..Could the ECM need a hard reset, I have not read any threads suggesting it would have any effect on the fans, I did read a thread that mentioned a pressure switch on the AC pump, that triggers the fans when AC turned on?. Can anyone tell me at what temps I should see the fans or fan go active without AC on?
Thanks again for all your suggestions and diagrams.
Letting her cool now so I can check coolant levels.

Cooling fan issue RESOLVED
Ok some of you may have read the previous posts about my fans issues, well driving home today from Myrtle Beach I got stuck in bad traffic in Virginia beach and started to overheat in a big way. I pulled over and shut down to cool off.
While waiting I decided to try replacing the fan relay with the old one that had appeared to be partially working .
Imagine my surprise everything working fine. Turns out the faulty drivers side fan (which I also replaced) was causing the original issues of fans not running.
So I guess the guy who sent me the replacement relay owes me some money!

This whole problem is clearly a failed fan control module. This module is located in a water protection sleeve between the fans. It is a computer that interfaces with the
ECM to activated the fans and change speeds etc according to demand. This part failed on my XKR and it was the entire problem of overheating at stop lights. The key symptom is when the AC gets hot at stops, it means the fans are not running!
