Ignition lock problem

Ignition lock problem
I am having problems turning the key in the ignition lock to start the vehicle (96xj6). I have tried to lube the mechanism without much luck. If the key slides in then it is not the barrel lock? Jiggling the steering wheel back and forth helps sometimes but it is getting worse and I am afraid I am going to get stuck somewhere where I cannot start the car.
Do I need to look below the lock mechanism and are there parts that wear out that will actually let me turn the key?

By jumpering the relay you eliminate the BPM and relay and see what you get . You are aware how fragile the plastic is in the gearshift area . The locking solenoid pin you can see by removing the steering column lower cover and the pin goes aft into the steering wheel . Motorcarman has much more practical experience on this . Bob ?

I don't think my problem is with any relays (I guess) it is more of a mechanical problem with the key not wanting to turn to the start position. This morning it worked great 2 times and this afternoon I thought I was going to get stuck in a parking lot. I must have jiggled the key and moved the steering wheel for 10 minutes before the key finally turned to the run position.
Something is not lining up right or is wearing out. This is my daily driver but I am lucky I do have a parts car to pull from. Looks like I will be getting into the steering column.
