my neighbors say they enjoy the car, and whenever it starts up they think they're living next to James Bond. So I've got that goin for me, but I am very, very curious about the quiet start feature, near the bottom of the article

We can say, however, that the V-8's retuned exhaust is much more aurally subdued. On overrun, the outgoing V-8 cars always sounded like someone tossed a string of firecrackers into a drainage culvert—fun till the cops show up. There's still a snarl when you back off the throttle, but you no longer expect the exhaust to leave a trail of lightly smoldering shrubs in your wake. There's even a Quiet Start mode, so you can turn on the car without becoming the 575-hp rooster of your neighborhood. Dig deep enough into the throttle, though, and the pipes will open up regardless of the mode.
Our two sporty cars are not the 'roosters of the neighborhood' lately. We are out-gunned by a Camry with a leaky manifold, and a derelict Ford Explorer.

So, I can't win the ________________________________ <---intentionally blank

This feature have been enabled on my car for many years (since O2 patch). Even new exhaust didn't solve this issue. Mine doesn't do pops on a very first startup of the day.

What do I win?

That’s a nice video review of the 2020. It makes me appreciate what I have now, and at the same time want Jaguar to hook up the black box and tune my engine and trans to the new specs !! I need to call my dealer and see if this can be done

That's hilarious.... the choices being loud, or loud. I wasn't curious because I wanted it silent, but like the engineered controlled misfire, I would be curious on the engineering.
I guess I can just hold my exhaust button down and pretend.
And sorry Sin! =/ And we've a janky ******* and a car that has a rattling cat which makes the hairs stand up on their end, as it rolls through our quiet neighborhood, so I am not the only scofflaw.

The quiet start option is pretty much the only thing on the new model that I wish my 2016 R had. I obviously love the exhaust, but there are times and situations in which starting the thing can make you look a bit like a bellend.

I've got to imagine a software update could patch this, and add the behavior? It seems all that one needs to do is hold down the exhaust at startup. I might even try it on my 2019. Maybe it's there? Not likely. =)

No, it requires the engine to produce vacuum to close the valves, but before the engine is running to avoid a loud start. The engine can’t produce vacuum before it’s running.

Hacks include installing an electric vacuum pump which can be energized before the ignition via a switch.

I know this is an old thread, but is this feature actually a thing?

I tried holding down the exhaust button as I'm starting the vehicle like it says to in the linked review video above and I notice no difference at all. I love this car, but I like to wash my car super early on Saturday and Sunday mornings, and I do feel reluctant to do so given how loud it is...lol

I looked in the manual and cannot find anything about a "quiet start mode". Perhaps I missed it, or the instructions in the review are wrong?

Anyone?

Only way I've found to quieten down the start is to select D (or R) straight after firing it up. It still snarls loudly at first, but what else would you expect when you wake up a sleeping Jaguar?

Fair ;-)

So it's BS then. Starting to get that impression: "Loud or loud".

As far as I recall, the MY21 and later cars have the quiet start enabled by default. It can be overridden but not by the methods some of these reviewers suggest - you have to engage 'ignition' mode first (press the engine start button with your foot off the brake pedal), put the car into 'Dynamic' or press the exhaust button once and then start the engine.

EDIT: Confirmed on this Jaguar dealer's website

"If desired, Quiet Start can be over-ridden by selecting Dynamic Mode or by pressing the switchable exhaust button before starting the engine."

Thanks for posting that clarity man. Appreciate it.

When I have to start my car early in the morning, I leave the garage door closed. Only after it starts up do I open the garage door to back out. Hopefully my neighbors hear less of it!

Sounds like the best and only plan really. Not sure how much it will help the immediate neighbour, but the majority might have a better experience ;-)

I find this new car loud with this default quiet start. The first gen cars must be insane on startup in comparison.

My new car is a 2024 F-type bought 8 months ago. I put my foot on the brake firmly and hit the start button,,, then put it in reverse quickly to lower rpm. Then open the garage door and slowly back out. Best way I've found.

I wonder if that is good for the car? Is there a reason it raises the rpms beyond "sounding great"?

The RPMs run high on cold starts to heat the cats up quicker for emissions purposes. That is the only functional reason.
