Default Jaguar F-Type Engine Ticking/Exhaust Squeal

Context: I have a 2014 Jaguar F-Type supercharged V6 with 80,000 miles. I got. For $32k at a local dealership on February 28, and the car has had a few check engine lights come on already which I already sealed with *the purge valve was replaced*

Problem 1.) Engine Ticking.
I have this very annoying sound coming from the engine bay that is very noticeable when at a full stop. I can’t really hear it while driving. It’s especially noticeable at a cold start. Any ideas of what it could be?

Problem 2.) Exhaust Squeal & Screeching
At cold start the engine has this terrible squealing sound followed by a second screech. Once the engine/exhaust gets warm both sounds disappear.
but while running errands & driving normal the sound is very loud. Especially when accelerating, letting go of the accelerator or braking. I will record a cold start and upload it below . As well as the ticking

Problem 2 could be the exhaust valves opening and closing, they can become loud if un-lubricated, which is more likely on an earlier model F-Type. It would make sense on startup as the vehicle starts with the valves open then closes them as vacuum pressure builds.

A squealing sound could also be the supercharger drive belt, the recommended interval for replacement is I believe 96k or 6 years, which for your car would mean it is overdue.

Do these sounds occur at a certain RPM?

I’m not sure. I will go drive around right now and give you an accurate answer

I had a ticking sound at startup on a truck a year or two ago, eventually traced it back to a manifold leak that would go away once the vehicle came up to temp.

No experience with this on the f type, but if you're noticing ticking that's obnoxious at cold start and becomes less noticeable drive, that's probably where I'd start. Good luck.

Same issues here on my 2016 R! I thought I was crazy for a minute, but the squealing/screeching/wheezing from the exhaust on a cold start is jarring for sure; my husband suggested it may also be one of the exhaust valves. I hope to get to the dealership soon as luckily it's still under warranty. Please do update your findings.

Reviving the thread. Did anyone find out what this was? I wish OP had updated with his findings.

How do you lubricate the exhaust valves?

Pack a high-temp grease into the mechanism (AKA brake grease). You DO need to free it up, first.

What mechanism? The exhaust valves are inside the engine? You can't lubricate them?
Free up what? If the exhaust valves are not working then the engine is not running?

The active exhaust valves are external to the muffler. The one time I looked at the valves, I didn’t see how to lubricate them.

Sorry, didn't think I needed to specify that the EXHAUST bypass valves just before the muffler (as shown above) were what I was talking about.

thanks, @DJS

I have heard of them being lubricated, by both owners and dealers.

Most likely the ticking sound is the idler pulley. It is a known issue and there was a technical service bulletin: https://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/tsbs/20...95351-1020.pdf

See repair instructions: https://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/tsbs/20...18147-9999.pdf

I had mine (2017 V6) replaced under warranty and the sound was eliminated. I only noticed it at idle, just as you described. If the pulley fails it's bad, so be sure to take care of it: https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/f...pulley-191513/

Ticking: this can be the (perfectly normal) sound of the two high pressure fuel pumps, and it can be quite loud.

I would argue that the injectors sound like a tap, not a tick. The idler pulley ticking sound is very obvious at idle, from inside the car with the windows and doors shut where ordinarily you cannot hear any tapping or ticking. Like I said, better to get it checked out before it ruins the rest of the belt drive.

I don't seem to have any ticking but I have the creak/hiss from the rear when dropping to 1000 RPMs. Very quiet but very noticeable when idling around with the top down. It doesn't seem to correspond to the valves opening or closing though.

So I've confirmed it is my valves squeaking. Is copper grease a semi permanent solution? I've heard it usually requires a full replacement of the back box but that feels like a temporary solution as well since the design seems to be the problem.

I’m under the impression that they improved the valves at some point, since this was a relatively common complaint.

Well that would be unfortunate. Anyone have a part number for the improved back box so I can check the price?

The SVR has a very different rear muffler/backbox setup to other V8 F-Types, it has dual north-south mufflers as opposed to a single east-west muffler.
They are also Titanium/Inconel and massively expensive as a result.
Last but not least the exhaust valves may be different.
