Default Blue Top Solenoid for XJR Mercedes Transmission

I'm hoping for feedback from folks who have installed these in their XJR. The comments I'm seeing on a Mercedes forum range from hot to cold - lots of folks love them and others complain of shifts that are too hard/abrupt, including downshifts. These appear to be standard issue on AMG cars with this transmission so the bias is obviously toward performance. I'm leaning toward these versus replacing with stock solenoids ($430 vs $150 a pair). Any comments appreciated.

brown tops are obsolete they haven’t been installed in cars since 2005

without a tune the 722.6 will always shift sloppy. nobody touches our egs51 but everybody and their mom has a tune for the 52 and they can shift real crispy

You’d think with the XKR (X100 platform) have the same 722.6 transmission that somebody would have a means to reprogram our TCM’s. I have the blue tops (not installed yet) but, I’m planning on replacing the conductor plate, electrical connector and overlap kit all together. I just need the time to do it.

A2B- You've had that bottom line in your signature for over a year; probably lots of dust on them by now.

Doug - Go for it! I put those in a couple of years ago and, yes, there were some hard shifts at first. Then I found the adaptation procedure, attached. No more hard shifts, but you can still feel it. And, the trans downshifts appropriately for "rolling stops."

It is true. I have driven amg m113k (the s/c v8 cars) with a tuned 722.6 and for an older torque converter trans, it's decent. Nice to hear the blue tops are an improvement.

Question to those with the blue tops, do they give a kick down when flooring it at 20mph? I've driven many many x308 xjr's. None kickdown from a roll at 20mph.

Nah, they’re in bags inside of a box. 😂
I’ll just live vicariously through you guys and just assume mine shifts great!
If you think those are dusty, you should see the GN in the garage waiting on me to rebuild the front suspension for the past 7 years. 😳😳😳

Well, good that they're in bags and in a box, just like that TB I've been saving for the last 19 years. And, yea, I'd like to see the GN, even with the dust on it. Those cars are pretty awesome.

I had a conversation with Highhorse a couple of years ago about the trans, so I went back through to see what I wrote about doing the valve body and putting in the blue tops. Things were a little more current in my mind back then, so i copied it and put it in a word doc, attached. It also has a link to some upgraded overlap valves that you can do while you're in there. Also attached is the rebuild procedure for the valve body so you can see what you're getting into.

Have a great weekend!

Sorry to bring up a dead thread but I too am wondering how much of an upgrade the blue top solenoids are and if anyone has come across any valve body upgrades or tcu tunes that work with our cars.

All good bringing it up, saves us chasing this thread since the update some threads have disappeared.

If all you have is the an XJ8, it's not going to help you, that trans is the ZF5HP24....the XJR came with the W5A580 type 722.6 trans for these blue tips. hispeed42's response tells it like it is along with the reset pdf.

I'm only working with your name because your MY and Model isn't listed in your Signature for us to know how to reply. Plus, where your location is, ...as different areas of the world have different model options. Just go into your User CP (top right in the drop down by your name) and you can add them there. This will greatly help us with responses and if someone could be nearby to assist in other issues, cheers.

Hey thanks for the reply! Yea sorry about the signature i keep forgetting to set it up. I have an 01 XJR I'm all good on what to get and how to do a job like this, I'm just looking for any opinions on how ti effects our cars specifically as most of the info online is related to the E55 AMG. Also yea I made my account when I only had my 83 XJ6, but my daily is the 01 XJR now.
