I'm UK based and just bought a very nice 1992 facelift 4.0 XJS.
Unfortunately it only came with one key (Ford type) which has the inbuilt torch, also no ID number on the key.
This key operates the ignition, boot and glove compartment
I'm not up to date with this key type and looking for some help/information in getting extra keys sorted.
On the key type I have I see no slot for a transponder and wondering does it have one ?
Should the car have came with a key with key fob with remote buttons for unlocking etc like the XKR I have ?
And the big question how do I go about getting replacements.

That's a Tibbes type key. Plenty of places can supply and cut replacements, including larger branches of Timpson.
You also need a separate key for the fuel cap (unless it's been replaced) Jaguar Heritage hold the records for your car, including the key numbers. A helpful Main Dealer should be able to facilitate that (show prodd with your V5) or contact Jaguar Heritage direct.

Will this key (with torch) I have be fitted with a chip/transponder since I can't see a slot or aperture etc.

The key doesn't have a transponder. However, I think a UK 1992 would usually have had an alarm fitted with the associated remote fobs. Does the handbook not indicate this?
Go to the boot and look behind the right rear lights. If you see 3 black boxes fixed by the bottom bolts that's connected to a big white connecter then yes you have the alarm system fitted.
I would guess that its been unnplugged. They have a habit of running the battery down if not used. If you need a remote then good luck. It will need to have the 418 Mhz frequency.
Or buy this. Cheaper than buying the fob alone.
OEM valet and flat keys come up on ebay. Hard to find someone to cut tibbe keys now. How do you lock the doors. The 92 uses the same key as the fuel cap ?

In terms of locking the car I just use the key at the door handle lock which centrally locks the doors and boot.
The fuel cap at some time has been swopped out for a non locking version.
Just found the handbook for the car, details that car unlocking etc is via the key/door locks, no mention of a fob.
Checked the boot as suggested by malc4d and came across three unplugged connectors behind the rear lights.
Thinking this may have been for alarm ?????

You HAVE the alarm !! see the black box at the bottom of the photo. The connector in your hand goes to the connecter from the box/ There will be another connecter, black, that fits that black connecter in you hand.
Fobs are hard to find and are very expensive. This should have been added to my text above. This will come with 2 fobs that will most probably need batteries.

I'm plying through all the paperwork and in the last 15 mins found an invoice from a good few years ago from a garage detailing that due to a fault on the alarm system it was DISCONNECTED which is a shame.
I assume they were to try and rectify the fault but were unable to do so ??
Wondering if it's worth getting somebody to try and look at it again or just go down the road of a new alarm as per the link you sent me.

Regarding the torch battery/unit, had a quick search but couldn't see any.
Is it a sealed unit or can you prise apart and just replace the battery itself.
Prise it apart, BEWARE spring loaded so get ready. The 3 alarm boxes are , The small one you see is the "bump" sensor. Behind that is the ,now long dead, backup battery both sit on top of the security system.
Does the fuel cap look like above ?
I'll have a go at prising the torch battery holder, just hope it doesn't !!!!
My fuel cap is a plastic non locking version as per the link below.
The fuel cap hinged door cover doesn't have a key lock.
Door when closed is locked when central locking is engaged.

I have a 1991 facelift coupe and also needed to sort out spare keys. My setup is the same - the Tibbe key for ignition, glovebox and boot, and a flat key for the doors. I guess that's what they had in the parts bin at the time of build! For what it's worth, mine has no transponder for an immobiliser nor an alarm and key fob.
For the Tibbe key (ignition etc), you can read the code yourself from your existing key and have one made. I used these guys if you're UK based (no affiliation, I just used them last year and it worked fine for <£20): Jaguar Tibbe Key (morlandslocks.co.uk). Instructions on reading your key code here: How To Read Jaguar Tibbe 8 Cut Key Codes (triple-c.com). There are basically only thee levels of 'cut' with corresponding numbers, it's pretty straightforward.
For the door key, my previous owner had helpfully got a Toyota blank and clumsily modified it to fit. Turns out the correct blank is called variously Ford FC7 / Ilco X86 / JMA FO-TX. I sourced by own blank but tbh I think any key cutter should be able to sort out a replacement for you if you have an original key to copy.
