Angry 2017 XE 25t Portfolio - Timing Chain Issues

A very good day all!

I am new to the forum and wish i was coming here under better circumstances.

I have just been advised that i need to replace my timing chain, the associated cost was eye watering!! I am wondering if anyone on here has had experience with this issue, who they dealt with and the associated costs to get it rectified?

I am located in Queensland (Brisbane) and would welcome your feedback on good, honest, authorised Jaguar specialists?

Thankyou in advance for your support.

The F-type forum has a number of Down Under members, you might try asking there for a mechanic. More traffic there.

In the US, I think the 2017 2.5 had the Ford EcoBoost engine? Mine has the Ingenium.

The timing chains and their tensioners is the major issue of the Ingenium engine but does not affect every single engine. In fact as far as I know, this is the only serious issue with the engine. Clearly there are others not so serious. However, the issue was eventually recognised, somewhat tardily, by Jaguar and revised parts were incorporated into 2019 engines, but at what engine number this was is unknown, Here in the UK at Jaguar specialists, the cost to replace the timeing chain and upgraded parts can vary between £2500 and £3500. The price of the replacement parts and chains is a fixed sum, so the variance will be down to different labour rates and also how the job is done. Jaguar will have times for the job, of course, but if a Jaguar agent is given the job, the labour rate will be the highest, but the time for the job will be adhered to. If you can find the Jaguar times for the job, it will be easier to work out if the garage is quoting a reasonable price or not.

Some shops prefer to remove the whole engine and gearbox, then split them to gain access to the timing chest which is at the rear of the engine, (BMW is similar with one of their engines). Other shops prefer to remove the gearbox leaving the engine in situ and put up with having to work with the car up in the air. If I were you, I'd try searching the internet to try to find garage trade views and videos.

Of course with older XEs with high miles, the cost of this job will be a significant percentage of its value, and may even exceed it.

My car is also a 2017 and a Portfolio, so your thread interests me. How many miles on your car, and how often have you been changing the oil and filter since you bought it ?

Hi Fraser, Thankyou for the insights. Vehicle has 90,000kM’s with regular service. The feedback that I have been given by a couple of reputable mechanics (including one that previously owned a XE) is that it is a major issue in the Jag and Range Rover vehicles and should have been a product recall. My understanding, as you also pointed out, is that Jag was aware of the issues, and in November 2019, changed the timing chain for a more robust option. I have also been advised that a timing chain is designed for the the life of the vehicle, where’s belts etc are expected to be replaced.
