Default Tranny, what part is this I'm seeing? Wet?? Why??

Just what part of the transmission am I seeing through this little window? AND doesn't it appear to be rather wet? I see the drip but it sure looks like the recessed whatever it is has been seeing a lot of it. Or is it just me?

I'm trying to hunt down the source of the fluid leak and reviewing the video left me wondering what's going on here. Any ideas?

It is called a TORQUE CONVERTER.

If the fluid leaking is ATF, then as stated in another thread, it is filled with the wrong fluid.

Hate to say it, but yeah, the tranny's gotta come out for that. There's like a $10 seal around the shaft where the torque converter is joined to the oil pump housing on the front of the tranny that is leaking. And if it is going to come out, then there are a number of things that should be done to it while its out. Short of a full rebuild, you ought to replace all the exterior case seals, upgrade the valve body and A-drum, replace the filter and fill with the correct ZF fluid. Then it'll be good for another 100K miles.

I just bought a cheap 1998 XK8 because the gearbox was rebuilt 18000 miles ago but failed.(P1722)
It went into reverse fine but SLAMMED into DRIVE and locked into LIMP HOME with GEARBOX FAULT message.

It has RED fluid in it so I am guessing the failure might have been caused by this?

I replaced the gearbox with a spare I have so all is good.
