Default any tips /tricks to removing oil filter canister on 3.8 engine

I'm changing the oil and adding a spin-on oil filter kit. In looking at the canister and the parts to it, it seems to me that as soon as I start loosening the retaining bolt oil will begin dripping out of the bottom of this canister and/or the whole canister may drop off the filter housing. In either case, I'm predicting a big oily mess. Any tricks or tips on best way to avoid such a mess ?
Thanks,
Schmitty

It's been a while, but this is what I remember.

Washing up bowl or similar tray, rubber gloves, ratchet and socket that fits the head of the through bolt that retains the canister.

Position the bowl to catch any spills, rather than your face or body

Undo the bolt, supporting it so that, as much as possible, it stays in contact with the bottom of the canister. Hold your arms and elbows angled up so that any oil that runs onto your hands doesn't go on up your sleeve.

Simple really. Done with care, it's easier than many spin on filters.

whether it's a canister or a spin on filter, oil will come out with a vengeance.
Have a large container ready to catch the flood of oil. Wear safety goggles, gloves, and disposable rags.

I always found digging out the old seal and getting it all out was a real pain the *** ?
Installing the new seal is a bit of a bitch too.
Adding a spin on adapter would simplify things.
