Default Oil change price quote from dealer ....

Hey guys,
We just called my local Jaguar dealer to get a price quote before an oil change for the Jaguar F-Type sports car. I did not even get it to specifics as to whether it's a V6 or V8 or a 4-cylinder. The girl at the service department immediately told me it's $400 for an oil change.

Hahahaha ....... 🤣


The dealership is delusional !!

A lot different oil change compared to my vintage brits, but easier and practically no mess. No oil running down your arm from the filter or pan bolt. No fighting with the canister as on an E. Needs super specific oil, but $120 USD gets it done.

To be fair, an oil change at the Porsche dealership on my V6 Cayenne was $450 pre pandemic. The waiting room was very nice and there was a window into the very clean shop. Just saying, $400 is not a JLR specific ripoff.

No doubt JLR is on par with other luxury brands, but it doesn’t make the price any less ridiculous. I have a hard time subscribing to the idea of paying luxury tax for something as basic as an oil change just because it’s a luxury brand. It just rubs me the wrong way. It doesn’t matter whether I can afford it or not, I just don’t like the idea of being overcharged just because…And that’s exactly what this is…Just because they can…Oh, he could afford this expensive car so clearly we can just overcharge for whatever…Don’t like this mentality…

They are in the business of making money and they’re not our friend. They must have enough people willing to pay.

From what I've seen on Youtube it doesn't look easy for a properly complete oil change on the F-Type.

Why would you say that? It’s dead easy with a pump from the top, and it’s fully equivalent to getting it from the bottom of the car. If done properly you will get the same amount of oil out both ways.

Easiest oil change of any car I've ever owned. Filter unscrews from the top and drops right out. Extraction of oil via the sump tube under the oil cap into my pump. Takes about 5 minutes, and not a drop of oil spilled. Bonus: my pump collects the oil into a calibrated reservoir and I see exactly how much was removed. Makes refill idiot proof.

Dealership extracts it from the top.

They also do a multipoint inspection which requires lifting the car. They bill it as a benefit to the car owner and I suppose it is to most who are rather unaware of their vehicle but really it’s just a gravy sniff to see what else they can sell you. They do a short little video of the things they have found.

There’s no way in heck I’d run my Jags through a quickie oil change shop. It’s just too easy to DIY. Which is good ‘cause there’s also no way I’m running a 16,000 mile service interval. That’s just crazy talk.

Default Oil change, no lift needed!

I've had British cars since 1985 and have done MANY standard oil changes. The oil change on the F has to be one of the easiest DIY projects I've had. Yes, some anxiety around getting the oil level correct. Check it on a level surface BEFORE the change. The other thing is doing a flush. Buy some less expensive spec oil and after extracting all the existing oil, put about 2.5 L in. Then, extract that. It should help clean out remaining dirty oil, at least it did for me. Then put in whatever new oil amount.. 7.25 litres is what I took out, so put that back in. Spot on.

If you are thinking of doing a change from underneath, then yes, taking off all the covers/plates/etc is a bit of a job, and does require a lift.

I also sent that used oil out to Blackstone for a report and it came back fine. I plan to continue that as well.

From this video removing the oil from the top doesn't get all the old oil out. In this video there was over a quart of old oil still in the pan. That's very concerning to me so I'd probably have to pay for a proper oil change.

Not sure I agree. I have done both and the difference was so minimal. Both times car was warmed up, level ground. I saw hardly any difference between the two and I have never looked back. I am on an AWD '16 R, I know some RWD act differently.

Yup, and if you want a proper oil change you need to do it properly. This guy in the video you posted did not. He did not follow the procedure. The mistake he made is he didn’t unscrew the oil filter before pulling the oil out, and have it that way while it was sucking the oil out. If you don’t do that you don’t get as much out. That has been mentioned on the forum before, and if you look in the workshop manual it states this must be done in the procedure.

Go to a dealer if you want. They are just gonna suck it out from the top. Knowing them they may not follow the procedure. After all, half of them can’t even refill with the right amount of oil…Often overfilling…Then they grossly overcharge you for the privilege.

A monkey could do an oil change on these cars. A small investment in a few tools and a small amount of time is all it takes. Your costs will pay for themselves instantly, and at least you will know it’s done right…Why? Because you will care about your car far more than the dealer tech and make sure it is done properly.

This isn’t even talking about the convenience of doing it at your house in a half hour vs waiting at a dealer, driving there, potentially having them damage your vehicle in some other way, etc…

My local dealer wanted $900 for a new "Jaguar" battery. $750 for a non Jaguar brand. They wouldn't do the diagnostic because they said the battery was bad. I took it to a regular shop that works on all European cars, it turned out the battery was good, it was only 1 year old. Also I fogot to mention the dealer wanted to still charge me $350 to diagnose a problem the car had, but I told them how can they charge me for a diagnostic when you just told me you could not diagnose it because the battery was too weak for the OBD port to give a reading. I had been going to the dealer for years, but now they moved jaguar to it's own building with Land Rover so it seems what used to be an honest dealer then became crooked. I did not have to pay for the diagnostic (no diagnosis done) fee but it left a bad impression on me that if I was someone who did not speak up, I would have been charged this. It turned out the car's transmission was failing. I'm sure they knew it but didn't tell me since they couldn't plug in the OBD per their battery claims.

Total BS! I have drained the oil both ways and you do not leave any oil behind using the suction method.

Incorrect! It could not be easier when using an extractor. Jag's layout for this is great, and it gets all the old oil out. Like others, I worried about this.
By the way, you could pour a quart of clean oil in and extract that just to flush any old oil out. If you do, you'll find no dirty oil comes out.

Even the oil filter element is pretty much no-mess, as it drains properly before removal.

Easiest car ever to perform an oil change on.
