Hi Guys

I have a 1998 XK8 UK right-hand drive model. I recently had water ingress in the drivers foot well, this I discovered was seeping in under the rain gutter above the drivers door then running down the 'A' pillar, behind the plastic kick plate and onto the floor, this has been resolved. That has left me with an even bigger problem which must be linked as it wasn't there before the leak. With the ignition off both the red warning lights for the oil and temp stay illuminated, when the ignition is turned on all the warning lights illuminate and stay illuminated, there is no reading on the LCD display, the fuel gage does not move. When I start the car I have no rev counter either. I assume that something has got wet and shorted out, but where do I start? All the cables behind the kick plate within the drivers foot well are dry but they may have been wet when the water was leaking in. Is this a blown ECU? Any help you can give will be much appreciated.

 

Any chance the water found its way along the harness to the Instrument Pack?



The right hand harness connection leads in from where you've had water ingress.

Take a look at the ECU and see if there was water there, but I would agree with Graham that the instrument pack or one or more of the connectors to it are at fault. Fortunately, there are rebuild services for that.

 

Thanks guys, I have checked in and around the ECU but the recess and all that area under the bonnet in bone dry. I had assumed that water would have got to these connectors in the foot well, I have had the ignition on and disconnected all these connectors but the lights stay on, at the driver side end of the dash there is fuse box and one brown relay if I remove this relay the lights in the main pod extinguish but the two red ones (temp and oil) stay on. One thing I forgot to mention was that I have an err displayed on the climate control display along with a beep which is related as that was not there either! Is there anything under the carpet that is connected to the dash or ECU?

 

Brian...see if fuse 14 in the driver side fuesbox is blown.

If that is OK, try disconnecting the battery for a munute and then reconnect it. You will need to then reset your windows and enter your radio code (as per the owners manual).

If still no luck, your next step I think to to remove the instrument cluster and inspect it for water.

 

Thanks to you who replied and tried to be of assistance, I have resolved the issue of the warning lights, I replaced the complete major instrument cluster with a known good one and hey presto all works I am however left with a mileage showing nearly twice as much as the car has genuinely done, is there a way to calibrate to the original mileage or get the old cluster repaired?

I am having the entire instrument cluster replaced myself. Everything went wonky, and nothing reads right. I am adding another 10,000 miles to the clock, but I'll be able to read everything again. the original is FUBAR. (There's no saving this one).

 

I await the arrival of my Instrument Cluster so that i don't have to guess the status of my XK8's systems. It is truly a lonely vigil.
