July Meet and Drives
July is approaching quickly, and summer will be in full swing!
Noted events so far:
July 5th-7th - Pacific Northwest Historic Races - Kent WA
July 13th - Concours d’Elegance at The Wood - Alderwood WA
July 26th - Jaguars on the Island - Victoria BC
July 27th - All British Field Meet - Bellevue College
July 28th - Kirkland Classic Car Show - Kirkland WA
We spoke briefly about when to have another GTG & drive, and I had to admit my schedule is tight now until mid July. My next free Saturday is July 20th.
That said, I see no reason others could not put on a gathering in my stead. Growler and Swimref spoke of a few sweet roads near the North Cascades, that sound amazing. May be a chance for some of you North-enders to gather on some scenic byways for a change!
What about the 20th of July? I had one recommendation to do the Olympic Peninsula... Maybe Hurricane Ridge and Lake Crescent area?
Another possibility is a drive to Sunrise. Often overlooked, I find it one of my favorite places to visit had hike about on a clear day.
Thoughts about July anyone?

Still looking for some feedback for 20 July!
My first preferance is Sunrise, although currently closed, opening is set for 28 June.
An easy day drive where we meet in Enumclaw. 410 is steady traffic so you just hold the procession untill you enter the Park and exit on Sunrise Park rd, where the traffic vanishes and the scenery skyrockets. Truly a stunning location for our Cats.
Parking at the top is limited and always problematic. Parking next to each other for protection is not practical. A cafeteria is also available.
Blue skies are required, and National Park fees apply.

Alternate for grey skies?
Soleduc Hot Springs?(Forest drive)
410 to Yakima, Yakima canyon to Ellensberg, then backroads over Snoqualmie?

Many thanks Vince.....we really appreciate all you're trying to achieve here in this section in your role as RC.
If there's anything we can do to help, please let us know and we're there for you.
Please bear in mind for any meets that do happen there is now a JF Banner up for grabs to be used on the day

Wow... posted in the time to talk drives in error... Copy and paste here
<Paste>
So it sounds like I'll have the cat back in time for a drive on the 20th! WooHoo!
Only three of us showing interest in Sunrise so far..... Crossing fingers for others to join in!
Google says drive times is about 3 hours from Enumclaw to Sunrise and back. If we come off the mountain early enough, I thought a short side trip to Tipsoo Lake would be nice.
http://goo.gl/maps/XxJxk
V
Depart Enumclaw 9am
First pull-off/Vista is 30 minutes in (no restrooms)
Sunrise turnoff is 30 minutes after that.
The climb to Sunrise is listed as 40 minutes, but vistas are plentiful.
Those squeamish about parking lots will struggle with the top. Last time I went, we waited in a 10 car line-up till a car left the lot, then one car was let in.... didnt take long, but you have to take what you can get and make the best of it.
Thoughts so far?

I'm afraid I'm out of town that weekend, or I'd be there for sure. As to the parking lot at Sunrise, the earlier you get there, the easier it is. If you are there by 11 there should be no problem at all, but two hours later it is impossible. Under no circumstances should anyone miss the short (150-200 yards) trail off the south side of the parking lot to a breathtaking view of the huge glacier in the valley far below. There are numerous scenic pullouts on the Sunrise road, but I would save the stops for the drive back down.

Sorry to hear you cant make this one Swimref. Those attending can count on the trail hike to the valley overlooks! As you point out, "simply stunning" views.
At some time, I have a wish to hike to the foot of Emmons Glacier(the one you see from that vista). Will have to use the Honda to get there, as it is dirt roads that put you within a 2-3 mile hike. I have never "touched" a glacier, and it remains on my must do list! ah someday!

Would have loved to show you around the area personally, but with my Cat down in Fife getting serviced, my showing up in Pt. Gamble in a Civic would have been down right embarrassing!
You missed a beautiful gathering of classic Chris Crafts in Port Orchard today, not to mention the brewfest in downtown Bremerton!

I was planning on ERTC this morning, but Chrissy talked me into going house hunting instead. I agreed as long as we could drive the Jag!
I immediately saw a similarity between me and the 6-year-old boy who insists on wearing his superman costume to the grocery store. A Jag is a 42 year-old man's superman costume.
And the hat, too. Always the hat.
Thanks Jim. I must congratulate you on your level of attention to the forums. You are tireless! What is this about area codes, may I ask?

So, lets get serious about this drive to Sunrise!
Long range forecast shows sunny and 86 degrees!
I have heard from a few that worry about the distance we have done on prior drives, so this one should do nicely. Short, lots of pullouts and photo ops... Maybe a parting meal in Enumclaw (Anyone know a decent eatery? I'm open, Pizza and BBQ are my favs. Rainier Bar and Grill is touted highly on Urbanspoon for their pub food.)
If you have not been to Sunrise, you owe yourself the trip!
So far we have 3 XK's and no other models to up our class act....

2.) Muddydog
3.) Marko

Well folks, looks as though interest in a sunny drive into the mountain remains on the shoulders of a few faithful drivers...
I hope the lack of turnout does not prevent Marko or Muddy for sticking it out, but I am all in on this one regardless of the count.
Last minute attendees are always welcome, just remember that we "depart" the Enumclaw Safeway at 9am!
Bring smiles, camera, binoculars, sunscreen, water, and Park entry fees!
Lunch can be brown bagged, but there is also a cafateria at the top for basic burgers n such...
