Hey Rocky, I can't help specifically with your wheels on the X type, but, I had 17's on my X type and could have went to 18's no problem. Some guys here have 19's and there's even 1 or 2 with 20's !!!
You should be fine on 18's but you are correct and the offset is important, just make sure you get sumthin real close to what you have existing setup.
Do yourself a huge favour and check out an online tyre calculator...All you have to do is punch in the info and it'll pretty much tell you whats what.....If you currently have say 225 x 50 x 17 on the car and want to go to 18's.......you may need sumthin like 235 x 45 x 18 or similar.
As an example - on my A6 I've just upgraded from 225 x 50 x 17 tyre / wheel setup to 255 x 35 x 19.....Having checked it out the dia is within 0.61% or thereabouts which means the speedo will still be correct.
