I have just bought some snow socks as we are experiencing a bad winter, for us anyway.

It probably will not snow now, but as soon as it does I'll let you know how I get on.
I have read reviews which suggest they are easily torn, but I suspect people are trying to drive in them as they would normally. I plan to use them just for the first/last part of my journey as the house is up a hill. In the last snow I could not make the last 50 yards, frustrating to say the least.
A friend has a neighbour who is Austrian and he has been using his snow socks to get in and out of where he lives, again on a hill, with no problems in a rear wheel drive auto BMW 3 Series.

First short test around a carpark that was as much ice than snow. It is a fiddle to put on and even with the gloves you get dirty. You do not need to get it on perfectly, so long as it is over the back of the tyre it centres itself as you move. I also only put on one and that was enough.
So on a slope with ice and snow it will get you going.
