Default Changing Oil Pan Gasket

I have recently bought a 2004 X Type with the 3.0L and the oil pan is leaking pretty good. I looked at the oil pan and it looks like it could be complicated to change. What all is involved in changing it?

I've just looked at the procedure and the first step is "remove the transfer case".

I hope the guys have a workaround for this to help you.

Rigsby, essentially to replace the gasket you will have to get to one bolt which is right under the transfer case. Everyone I know of has either removed the transfer case or they have drilled a hole through the case to access the bolt under the transfer case mount. Don't remove any of the other bolts until you can be sure you can get this problem bolt out.

Ok thanks for that information. I will get under the car her in the next day or two and take a look. I may have to change out my transfer case here shortly anyways so if that's the case the I will change out the gasket then!

Somebody also reported that they were able to bend the handle of an open end wrench and we able to fit it in and break the bolt loose. I think they then had to use a saw of some sort to cut the loosened head off the bolt. I think that then allowed them to remove the pan.

On assembly I believe they were able to find a shorter bolt that could be slid into the space, threaded, and tightened.

Does that seem right?

Thumbs up Best of Luck

Best of luck to all you brave DIY soldiers. My local mechanic said it was an 8 to 9 hour job (he seemed shocked). I capitulated and let the local Jag dealer do the job. Cost $1,200 bucks. At any rate, please keep posting your X-Type trials and tribulations.

Did they remove the T-Case to do it, or did they just drill though the case?

If it were me, I'd check to see if there was a new hole and if there was, for $1200, I'd go back and have a "talk" with them (do it now to make sure that they "remember" having done it...)

I did this on my 2.5L after being quoted $1,800 from the dealership. Keep in mind when "drilling" the transfer case, you'll only be drilling or cutting away the bolt housing section of the transfer case. Just take your time and keep checking your cuts. I accidently cut the oil pan, which a local shop welded it back up for $40. $32 gasket, $40 weld and a couple of hours is still better than $1800.

Also, I need to cut down (shorten) a socket to get the bolt out. It was easier to this socket in place then the forcing a full size one.

Best of luck.

Here's a picture of the bolt "housing" section I cut out of the trans axle.

My local Jag guy (All Jaguar Longwood FL) did the gasket for $700. It took all day and they did a great job.
