RE: Is the 'wood' actually plastic???
I have some first hand experience with the X-type veneers.
Traditionally for the last many years, the wood trip parts start with a die cast aluminum piece then they glue on the real wood veneer. next they get several coats of the plasticy finish which almost makes it look fake.
The company that I worked for was proposing to us magnesium casting in order to save a little weight and add a little precision.
It was an ongoing project with Jag in late 1999, early 2000.
There were some silly issues with getting the glue to stick the wood properly to the magnesium castings.
Itwas a bit silly because we were forced to use a new surface treatement with magnesium because the treatment used for aluminum was being banned. we failed the adhesion tests and proposed some options that cost more money. Jag declined and stayed with Al because it was cheaper at the time. When they had to stop with the treatment, the wood did nto stick properly to the Al either.
Now they still use an Al casting with a new more expensive surface treatment. I am sure that if we had been the supplier and worked through the issues that the overall long term costs would be lower.
Oh well such is the way of the automotive world.
short answer is YES IT IS REAL WOOD.

I was going to say it'd be hard to fake that maple look on our cars if it were plastic. I figured there had to be wood under the coating because the wood looks as if it moves when you look at it in sunlight! Hey bo could you make a cover for the heat and cd players for our cars?

If it weren't real wood, wouldn't that be false advertising and therefore make Jag liable to a class action lawsuit from Jag owners? If I recall correctly, they advertised the car as having a

Who know's they all get around things! My cousin works for ford and actually works at the plant that also houses svt's workshop and said ford got sued from a guy that bought a cobra because his car didn't have the hp that ford advertised. Thats why ford changed the power rating from 400+ to 390!

Its real wood
I found the actual source of my X Sedan's wood trim entirely by accident. My wife and I were on the "Keewinaw" peninsula in the "UP" of Michigan, and stopped into a "factory outlet" store for things made of Bird's Eye Maple. Whiule my wife bought some cooking spoons ($25 each!), I asked the proprietor if he'd look at my dashboard to see if it was real, as I had wondered, also. When he heard that it was a Jaguar, he said no need to look, I know it's real, because I MADE IT. Turns out he makes all the Maple veneers for Jaguar, and when he showed me one ... no question. Exact match. So there you are.
