Default [Middle of job help needed] Size of lock/jam nut against inside of outer tie rod

Hey dudes,
My 2 biggest 18mm or 7/8 wrenches aren't fitting around the nut. Anyone know the exact size to go out and buy? Looks like it is going to be a beast to loosen, I need an exact fit. Help please

Thx dudes

If you don't get an answer, try this:

snug up a adjustable wrench on the nut, remove wrench, measure.

At that range of sizes, the gap between wrench sizes is 2mm. So, you do not need really high precision to get the right measurement.

If you do not have a metric ruler. Just wrap black tape around the adjustment to keep it still and take the whole wrench on your shopping trip.

If you can get a flarenut wrench in the right size, you will be much better off than with the standard combination wrench.

Thx!

I think I got the job done right, but does the nut that goes around the bottom of the tie rod under the knuckle keep turning when tightening to where it does not stop moving? I know I am working with a ball joint mechanism, but it feels very unusual when I can keep turning the nut even when it is all the way up against the knuckle -yikes!

Is this normal?

Thanks dudes

Don't put any lubricant or anti-sieze on the shaft! You can try tapping lightly on the top of the tie rod to try to seat the shaft into the knuckle. Usually hand pressure will keep the shaft wedged enough to keep it from turning while you tighten the nut.
Thx bro, you could have possibly saved my life. Originally, I thought it was ok since it is a ball n socket mechanism. After your PM I went back and checked. The nut was stripped, yikes. I was able to pull the striped thread off the tie rod shaft and use the nut from the otheir tie rod I bought in the set (good thing I only installed one). That sucker could have popped off at any moment. Thx for getting back to me so quickly

Glad you caught the problem before any serious damage occured! The nut from the original tie rod should be the same size. Are you sure the threads on the tie rod itself aren't damaged? I've never seen a tie rod nut strip it's threads!

What brand was the tie rod?
If it was aftermarket, they may have supplied a nut that was softer than the stud,
That's why the coil of steel ended up on the stud.

Was the nut tough to turn first, and then get easier to turn?

I checked the thread on the tie rod, it is fine. Yes, aftermarket tie rod. I was using my monster torque wrench when tightening, it got tight and then easy. I have snapped bolts in half with this torque wrench when getting nuts cross-threaded, so I put too much juice on it. I should have just used my socket wrench

this is the torque wrench I used

I got problems with my nuts

According to the JTIS, the nut should be torqued to 26 Ft-lbs! What were you torquing it to?
