02 x-type major problem
I have a '02 3 litre x-type with only a little over a 100,000 kilometers. It had started to lose power on a hill but recovered and shortly after it started to make a terrible knocking or loud ticking with a popping noise as well and lost power. It still starts and runs with these noises but will not rev up. The dash display went crazy and does not display anything now. The only issue with the dash previous to this was the odometer display was not displaying. I pulled the valve covers and ran it. No signs of any problems under there. Pulled the belts off and ran it but still makes the same noises. Not sure where to go from here. Thanks RV.

You do need to get fault codes read. However before you go replacing engine management systems or modules that do this that and the other get a decent mechanic / auto electrician to diagnose 'why' faults occur... I'm speaking from experience... often a fault will develop in a cable in the loom or on a connector that becomes dry, or maybe a sensor. I had an auto gearchange fault that seemed dire. Jaguar recommended a new control module at muchos moula... My mechanic and auto electrician traced it to a problem in the wiring system where various bits ot the loom came together. Once diagnosed, easy to fix... minutes... no number of new control modules would have sorted this.
