Anyway, a used engine for $1k and install for $1k sounds like a great deal. How many miles are on the used engine?
Regarding your motor being worth anything...yes, it is. But, you would need to find someone that is interested in the core to rebuild it. Or, if you and your boyfriend want to play with it, it wouldn't be a bad idea to have an extra engine for the Jag lying around. You both can tinker with it and rebuild it yourself.
Also, the install for $1k sounds extremely cheap, so the mechanic would probably want to keep the core (your old engine).
Also remember that you are going to need gaskets, etc, so it will be more than $2k our the door.
Good luck. Once I get around to looking at the rocker arms, I'll let you know what I find out about mine.
Cheers,
J

Well the guy that is doin the work is in Memphis t. My step dad has a warehouse that sells radiators and he sells to him. So they know each other well and help each other out when needed. I still dont know if he took it all apart in a day. Either way, the motor I found at a scrap yard for 1000 has 68,000 miles. I need to go get it asap. I can get the motor whenever but I don't have any other money. That's selling somethin that I was gonna sell for daughters Christmas but she dony need a grand worth of stuff at 1 year old! Lol anyways, Im pretty sure it comes with everything. I think I got one of my friends that works on cars that might help me out. I'll tell him to keep my motor If he helps me for free! Lol he's a Good friend. Just really busy with others at the moment. Does your do it when the motor is cold? Mine only does it once its warmed up? I coulda sworn it wwasn't that low in my motor but idk! I kbow a new motor would fix all my problems. That new throttlebody would help alot als.

Mine makes the noise from start-up. The car has been sitting in the garage since the noise stared, so I haven't started it in cold weather, and my garage doesn't get to freezing anyway.
I thought about tearing her apart yesterday, but it was 71 degrees here, so I decided to finish up the yardwork for the year.
Good luck, and hopefully everything works out for you. If mine turns out not to be the rocker arm(s), I will either sell her, buy a brand new engine or make her into a fun toy...I haven't really decided yet.
And yes, for $1,000 you should maybe ask if you can put a deposit. I don't think you will find one any cheaper, but I could be wrong.

It's in the 50% here pretty cold. And some mornings its 35 or so that's how I know that. And I guess its gonna have to sit a little longer. Ehh! No driving around for a while unless Im using my bf huge truck lol it has 40 in tires and two of them went flat there pretty old and we are gettin tires for it next week. So we are stuck at the moment. Good luck to you also. Did a shop tell you that its the rocker arms? How much are they?

Regarding the cold, that's probably because the oil is thicker...then once it thins out, the noise starts. During your next oil change (or drain some now), put a bottle of Lucas Oil Stabilizer and see what it does. If it quits the noise down, it could very well be rod knock.
No, a shop did not inform me it was a rocker arm, the shop told me it was lower end noise, most likely rod knock.
It doesn't sound like rod knock to me, so I asked around and someone mentioned that rocker arms could make that sound. Here is a video of a BMW that had a broken rocker arm which sound almost identical.
Now, even if it is a rocker arm, significant damage could have also occurred, so replacing the rocker arm may not be the entire fix.
A complete set (16) of rocker arms is $246. If I am in there, I may as well replace them all. I only looked at JCWhitney, so that may not be the best price. It's possible to only replace one as well.
Once I get around to tearing her apart, I will let you know what I find. I had to laugh at your statement about driving your BF's truck. My wife hates driving mine, an '06 Ram 1500 with 33 MTs on it, so I could only imagine what she would say if I had a lift with 40s.
Good luck again.

I had a ticking sound from under the car. Went under and thought I was hearing it from the oil pan. Since the transmission is right next to the oil pan, I put my ear very close to the oil pan (can still hear ticking but not from it) and then moved over towards the transmission. I could hear the ticking coming from the transmission and found out the flex plate had a crack in it. You just have to pin point where the noise is coming from.
