Default '04 Jag x-type 3.0 - Gear Box failure

Forum,
I have had intermittent gear box issues over the past year. In the past it would only happened when I was parked and the car wouldn't go forward or reverse. I don't know if this was the correct thing to do but I just restarted the car and it would fix the problem.
The other day was different, as I was driving about 30-40 mph the car suddenly wouldn't accelerate, as if i was in neutral, I luckily had enough momentum to get to the side of the road.
I shut the car off and restarted and it got me going but after 40 yards as I was driving, it happened again. I kept the car in neutral, restarted and the car worked for about a mile until I returned home.
I haven't used the car since 2 days ago when the incident occurred.
Does anyone have any ideas what the issue may be?
Thanks
SharkStopper

Is it manual or automatic? It is usually called transmission in USA.
Write info in signature like mine.

Transmission is slipping:
worn out clutches or bands
worn out o-rings
worn out pump
low ATF level
clogged filter
old ATF
What to do:
check codes
replace ATF/filter, add stop-slip additive
check ATF pressure in all ports
maybe replace ATF twice

Or check the shift connection on the transmission for correct setting. Has a tendency to wear and change the ability to shift correctly.

Make sure to read the embedded solution thread, too.
