Chris, first off, welcome to the Forums. Lots of good information and people here. We pride ourselves in being a better car group than where you will find else where. As part of this, we ask that you stop by the new member section and tell us a little bit about yourself and your car. This will give us a chance to get to know you and you get to know who the movers and shakers are here.
As for your problem, I would venture to guess that at some point recently, someone has kneed the headlight switch and this has damaged the dimmer switch just below it. I have seen this problem a few times. Unfortunately, the fix is getting a new headlight switch. One bit of caution if you do get a new headlight switch, there are 3 different versions out there. You have the basic (a lot of markets used this switch), then there is a canadian version, and finally the scandinavian version. The canadian and scandinavian versions turn on the side/main lights differently than the basic switch. Depending on how the car is wired, it may lead to other issues.

Welcome to the forums Chris,
I've moved your question from General Tech Help to X-Type forum. This is the place to post technical questions about your model. I've also reset your avatar which should rotate with your next post
Please follow this link New Member Area - Intro a MUST - Jaguar Forums - Jaguar Enthusiasts Forum to the New Member Area - Intro a MUST forum and post some information about yourself and your vehicle for all members to see. In return you'll get a proper welcome and some useful advice about posting to the forum.

Chris, Answer to 2 questions and it will be evident. Was your car originally a Canadian vehicle that was then "imported" into the US? The second being, if you start the car, do any of the outside lights turn on when the headlight switch is in the OFF position? If no, then you have the basic headlight switch. If the running lights come on with the headlight switch in off, then you have a Canadian car. It is highly unlikely that you have a scandinavian car.
