07 325i vs Jaguar X Type 3.0 AWD
Hi,
I am looking at 06 X type auto 66000 driven vs 07 Bmw 325i 64500. Condition of both cars is almost the same. The price difference is 4000 usd.
I personally like the looks and aura of a Jag but the internet is ablaze with X type horror stories. It even finished last in caranddriver shootout.
Come on convince me to go for the Jag. I already know that bmw 325i would kill the jag on a race track but I don't drive on race track. I drive on straight as an arrow road of Middle East/Gulf. So like every buyer, I am looking at:
1. Reliability
2. How quick would be the auto as compared to 325i.
3. How comfortable vs 325i.
4. What problem at 66k are hallmark of Jag.
Thanks

The horror stories from xtypes come from the auto transmissions and the transfer cases. I haven't had any major issues other than an A/C compressor on my 02 with over 120k miles on it. Personally, I love the jag and would recommend it to everyone, but I think the auto boxes are very poorly made which gives this jag a bad name. If you can find an xtype with the 5spd manual like I did, you will never buy another car in your life. This car is perfect. It's fast enough for me, but doesn't guzzle gas. It has awd for the mtns, it looks amazing, it has all the options and its a JAG!!

Although I may be outcast from this forum for saying this, but I would recommend the 3 series. The steering and the brakes are excellent. The seats are better in BMW especially if it has sport package. I've driven 2.5 x-type. Nice car, but a bit too plasticky for me. Bmw is plastic inside too but higher grade finish, IMO. As for issues, the cooling fan module likes to go out. Not major issue but can get pricey.

By 2004/5, the autobox reliability issues had been addressed relative to the early ones and are now much less in evidence and it's no longer a notable weakness.Similarly the transfer box has been strengthened and simplified (No viscous coupling). Nevertheless, it remains true that care must be taken to keep the transfer box topped up with oil. The whole car had a useful technical upgrade in 2004 - new prop shaft design, bolt on front end to simplify repair work, improved fuel system, additional crash protection in front doors and improved restraint control system.
I have no particular knowledge of BMW's, other than they're rather common here in UK and more often than not seem to be driven by rather self centred drivers! (IMHO!)

Not an easy decision
I own both. My BMW is an older '98 328is (set up with AC Schnitzer stuff) and a 2005 X-Type (XF wheels, Mina exhaust and Sport springs). I love them both and enjoy the differences between them. Sorry but I don't like post-2005 BMW's-the styling is not to my liking and they're no longer the "Ultimate Driving Machine". Too many electrics and they've gone "soft". When I want something sporty and edgy, I go for the 3. When I want a nice, relaxed and equally-quick ride, I go for the Jag. Tough choice but I like the Jag more for its "being different".

Like Armstrong said, by 2204-2005 the major issues that seemed to plague early cars were addressed. If you are looking at a 22006 model you should be good to go provided the car was maintained. As long as you keep up with routine maintenance you should be food to go. I have a 2005 with 125K+ miles and it has been one of the most reliable cars I have owned.

leg space ??? Are you saying that you haven't even sat in one yet ? You have a lot of work to do Syed.

I'm under the impression that the mileage difference between the 2.5 and the 3.0 is quite insignificant, so for resale value and everything I'd go for the 3.0.

I am buying the car blind. asked a friend to do it for me as I am four hours away from any city and desperately need a car. That's why i heavily rely on the advice given here.

I find the seats very comfortable and long trips are relaxing. I have back issues and the seats give great support.
Sounds like you won't need AWD for straight highway driving and no snow, however the 2.1 is probably gutless. Why not look at a rear wheel drive XJ or an S type ?

Friends,
Can somebody please upload or point me to X-type service schedule. The jag i am looking to buy was serviced out of Jaguar service centre after 40k km. I just want to be sure that it was maintained accordingly.
Also can somebody please tell me what is "transfer case" and how do i make sure that it is in good condition as apparently transfer case is an expensive repair. Also at what km this "transfer case" thing usually fails
Thanks

There are a ton of threads about the Transfer case. The problem is, is that there is no easy way to check the level, top off, or flush/fill it. So Jag says they're "sealed for life", and no maintenance is ever needed. A lot of owners, including myself have come up with really cool and easy ways of checking and filling the fluid level. It's tricky and messy, but there are numerous step-by-steps with pictures. The biggest problem with these is, that when owners finally do go to check the fluid, there is none (myself included- I just did mine a couple weeks ago at 85K and found not a drop of fluid). I filled it up, and it's been fine so who knows? It could last me another 100K. I don't beat on the car, so I'm not too worried about it.
Do a search on the forum for "Transfer Case" or "TC". Here is a thread I posted about it: https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/x...er-case-95194/
And to answer your other question, I believe the transfer case is what transfers the drive to both the front and rear axles for the AWD.
