Default 18's recommended size?

I'm going to upgrade to 18's on my X, what is the recommended size to avoid any rubbing issues and driveablility. Is the correct size 225/40/18 with a 7.5 wheel width?

Well...here's a little guide to help you along...

http://www.1010tires.com/tech.asp?type=wheels#offset

There's not a specific size that is absolute for any car out there. Things to take into consideration are things like caliper clearance...if you have a performace brake option, this may prevent you from getting certain types of rims. "Offset" is the key factor in this calculation. You can get 7.5" rims on the front and back and potentially get different offsets that will give the rear a 'staggered' appearance without requiring a different size tire. Keep in mind, not many wheel mfgr's offer this.

With the proper offset determined...you can then choose whatever tires work best for you. If you are looking to upsize your tire width by +1 or +2, you may want to get a wheel with a little more offset to prevent rubbing in turns...but watch for fender rubbing if your car has been lowered or rides low. Also, as you increase width in tire, the profile will have to be a lower % to offset the ovarall increase in circumference, thus throwing off your speedo and odometer.

1010tires has great guides on that as well.

Hope that helps a lil.

ive heard of people with 8 and 8.5 on the back that has caused rubbing with 225/40's, so 7.5 wud prolly be ure best bet, but im not sure

Are Jag hubs the lug bolt or stud type? i.e.: When you take the wheel off...do you remove lug nuts or the whole stud with the threads?

Anyway...H&R makes some awesome spacers....better for stud applications. I have 10mm spacers on the rear of my S60R and I have been planning on putting 5mm spacers on the front. If the Jag has lug nuts...they have specific applications with stud lengtheners so that you don't minimize the threads holding the wheel on and end up like this...

That happened to me with my monte carlo! The front driver's side rim (18" alba) came off the car and rolled for quite a ways...belle tire put smaller studs on my car than even the factory studs...freakin' *******s...

The usual I've encountered from all of the facts others have given that 225 40 zr or (high speed) 18. The offset ranges... 5x108 offset between 38-45 and width is usually 7.5 and at stock width still rub on sport models and models that have lowered suspension.

I have 18 x 7.5 with a +45 offset. 235/40R18 tires and it rubs a little bit on hard corners and if I have lots of weight in the back. Normal driving is fine tho. I'm going to try stiffer shocks to see if it'll help. I should've stuck with 225/40R18 tires. But I think it'll still rub.

Seems that changing the rim sizes is a bit of a lottery. Haven't of too many who have done it and are satisfied with the end result. I know there's a few that have. Why don't you post here and help out bubba.
Failing that Bubba.........be sure n come back and fill us in on how you get on with your stiffer shocks.
Someone upgraded theirs a little while ago with Bilsteins I think, although can't remember who. Maybe Aquill or Biggie will know.

awwww, you guys missed me! yea, i did the bilstien upgrade, it helped a little with the rubbing but much. The side to side rubbing is what was most improved, not so much from weight and hard bumps. my 38mm offset is definitly not recomended, it looks great in person, but really ruined the functionality of my jag.

Hey 04, i went to try and roll my fenders, but they told me there is a second layer of steel inside the fender that stops them from being able to roll them...is that true, or did they just feel like blowing me off?? i wantmy ride issues corrected, but i dont wanna put my stock wheels back on.

its true that there is steel as when i look at mine it looks real thick, the shop[ still rolled them a bit, but not as much as they can on other cars. I had my fenders shaved, so they took off a strip from the inside of the fender. Still rubs (a lot) mind you, just not as much as it used to

yea, thats what they recomended for me, i was nervous about clipping the fender, did your paint get damaged at all from the cutting? for some reason, my fronts rub more than the rears...the tire on the front driverside is ruined, im going to have to replace it, after only 4,000 miles so im pretty pissed. I wannt my car fixed man. DId it cost alot more to have them trimmed vs. just rolled??

the fronts i didnt get cut, the only side my tires rub are on the drivers side. i believe that the fronts can be rolled, as when the front got hit by y tire, it pulled out the fender a little, so i had to push it back in, i used a mallet, i dont reccomend this, as my paint cracked. but i now have a new fender and paint, so ill be gettin it rolled before i put the rims back on. the back where its been chaved the paint wasnt affected by this, but as it still rubs, the paint is starting it chip a little. you cant see it looking at the car normally, only when u look from underneath. m guessin that ure can only rubs on the driverside too, so if you dont need to, dont do anything to the passenger side. mine doesnt look any different from stock.

Hey somekidz.........welcome back bro, its been a while!
I don't know how you guys do it........All the hassle to get aftermarket rims on with a wider look...Jeeesh!
And then they rub, new tyres at 4k miles.....Wow.
You guys have gotta have a lot of patience and DEEP pockets!
More power to you though cos the cars look great.

ive been through 3 tires so far just from the driver rear in abouta year and a couple months, due for another one soon, got a few gashes in the tread from the fender. also i think the alignment was out and got some wear on the inside of the passenger rear so that will be getting changed too[:@].

thanks for the welcome man, i was in africa for a while with the service, which sucked and reaaaaaaaaally makes me appreciate living stateside and driving a jag. The wheels arent that bad, its just 1 in perticular that rubs like hell. This is going to be my first time replacing a tire since i got em, and hopefully the last. Im going to try another shop and try to roll the fronts, and cut the backs. i love the car, but im tired of treating it like a 3 seater and being so gentle on imperfect roads like its rolling on glass springs.

With the stock wheels i can have 5 people, and take a turn at 30+ mph and it still dont rub, i just dont get why i cant have the look of the drop and 18" wheels with the no rub like the stock wheels? maybe one day ill figure it out, fingers crossed
