hey guys,

I was talking with my parents mechanic about the Jag and he told me something about these cars that sort of caught me off guard. I just wanted some second opinions.

He said that the motors have a tendancy to die around 90K miles. This is because the cylinders are lined with some sort of coating that wears after time due to the ethenol in our gasoline. When the lining wears out the seals, rings, etc. go bad because the lining is what protects those components. He said it was only on the X-types I guess.... That is the best I can describe what he said to me.

Has anyone heard of this? HOw long do these things usually last?

Thanks!

Don't know about the 2.5 specifically, but sounds like he's talking about Nikasil lining in the cylinders - an issue that we early 4.0 owners have had to worry about. It's not ethanol, it's high sulphur content fuel that was the problem. I haven't heard that Nikasil was used in anything but the 97 - 00 4.0's. I expect others with more knowledge will chime in on this.

High sulpher content fuels have been legislated away for a long time now; so, it is said, that if the engine is still running with good compression today, the issue will not likely rear it's head - any damage would have been done and shown itself back when the sulphur was there.

You will find more than you ever wanted to know about Nikasil here:

I believe that Jaguar only used it on the 4.0 V8 from about '96 to '00.

rhriczho, you can easily get 250K miles out of a 2.5L engine. LIke is being mentioned, the nakisil engines are what he is talking about in the 4.0L engines (mainly run in the XK line as I recall, hence him thinking the X-Types). You have nothing to worry about with your engine. Keep up on the maintenance and treat the car right and you will have years and years of trouble free operation.
