2 Quick Questions

New to the Forum here, but happy to have found it. Ive got 2 quick questions about my 2004 X-Type. Was looking at the radio display tonight and notice the display is darker then the Odometer and Climate Control Screens are. Is this the way it is, or is it possible a light bulb is burnt out?
2nd Question- On the back deck under the rear window and behind the back sets are two sets of clips which I beleive may be used for holding in a car seat, but not sure. Some how one of these clips is missing the cover to it. Ive searched the web looking for another cover and also E-Bay as well. If you happen to know about these clips maybe you can point me where or who to contact to get a replacement cover for it.
The car is in almost mint condition but having a part missing from the inside and the dark radio display has me almost crazy. I like to take care of my things and always fix something when its broken.
ok - a p.s. too! Im not a frequest driver with this car since Im afraid to see what a typical Wisconsin winter would do to it. Im driving my 1993 Cadillac in the snow instead. I went out the other day after not driving the car for about 3 weeks and its dead. I put a charger on it and charged up the battery but is there something "live" even when the car is off? Ive only put on 2800 miles on this car since I bought it a year ago, so it dont get alot of use unless its a nice day.
Thanks for any info you folks can provide!

dont let the car sit, that is bad. second, according the the "book" you should never charge the battery when it is in the car. I live in cleveland and we have bad winters here as well. The car is all wheel drive for a reason.... drive it. i know that when i turn my dimmer from high to low real quick there is a quick delay in the lighting adjustment from the radio and other buttons. i think they are on differant relays or something. i dont know about the bulb thing but, it sounds like it could happen. oh, and have you tried the dealer for that clip thing yet?

Hi Vegas, I found out about the battery removal after I started charging it, so we wont be making that mistake again. I started the process and then came in the house and was reading the maual online when I noticed it. Have any idea why you can only use an 800 amp battery. I have a 1000 amp battery in my Caddy and wanted one for the jag too, but the local store here (Farm & Fleet) dont sell batteries for Jaguars. Cant imagine these batteries are so special. note: the current battery that is in the carsince I bought is NOT a Jaguar approved battery.
Im not sure about the radio light but I definetly know it is dimmer then all the other lights inside the car and have tried raising and lower the brightness setting to see what happens but nothing really helped.
I had not had a chance to query the local dealer here as to the clip sincethey are over 50 miles away from here. Cant say as a factory store they have impressed me at all anyway. Ive called down there 6 times and never once have they ever returned my phone calls. Now Corporate did impress me last fall when I had a bad seal on myoil pan and they had someone to my house in 30 minutes to pick up the car and haul it to the same dealer mentioned above for warranty repair.
I do appreciate the input from you and the heads up warning. [&:]

Hi and welcome!
Yup, severe cold can drain a battery. I'm from MI, and the last 2/3 weeks have been brutally cold, so this may attribute to the culprit of a drained battery.
As a test, I would measure the voltage w/a voltmeter when it is fully charged (IIRC, approx. 20/30 mins after driving at normal speeds) and measure it again after one night and then once again perhaps another full day later. This should indicate whether there is indeed a source that is draining the battery. I highly doubt you'll see major drops in that short of a time if it is only due to the cold climate.

charging the batter in the car properly will work, as will jumpstarting.
But the X-type is very electronic and the results of making a mistake hooking things up will be disasterous. The cautions above are only to prevent disasters, If you dont screw up the connections, then nothing bad will happen.
As far as keeping an AWD car for summer only? that seems totally ridiculous. I mean why pay the premium for awd and not touch snow? I cant see the logic there. (maybe people buy X-type for passion? )
Seriously, get the rocker panels rust protected, and drive the thing in the snow. (with snow tires) and you wont believe the difference over the Caddy.
THe Jag will depreciate to nothing faster than the rust will kill it. DRIVE IT DRIVE IT.

Used X types are cheaperthan most 2WD.
Agree about driving it all year though.

The radio should not be dimmer than the other lights.
I will look up the diagram later, notsure how handy you are with tools,
there is a separate dimmer controlled lighting wire that runs to back of the audio unit.
I have had a few that the wire is either broken or the pin is backed out.
If you are under warranty, dealer will fix wire or if indeed an audio unit problem, will replace it. Also if you tip the guy a few bucks he might even warranty your child anchor tether cover.

Fuel cost,
tire wear,
number of places to change oil (trans case, 2 difs..)
more moving parts, generally
awd wont spin wheels on dry pavement, so any miss-shifts or harsh moved will always do more wear to drivetrain.
you "pay" the price of extra drive train noise, vibrations
AWD has costs.... some are hidden some are not.. but they are there.
Then again this guy does not drive it ... so far he just paid the purchase price.. and a couple of tanks of gas.. lol

Im not talking about fuel costs.I am just talking about the cost of a buying a 2nd hand X type compared to the cost of buying other cars.
Also most owners dont bother changing diff and transfer case oil, only those who know AND are bothered.
Ive never paid any price for extra drive train wear as its still the original.Never noticed any drive train noise or whine.Tyre wear...big deal so tyres are changed once in a blue moon they are changed once in a blue moon on 2wd too.

Ksiegowy - welcome....re: the child seat anchor tether covers -my dealer charges $18 each for them and you will need to let them know your interior color code (or be able to describe it accurately). I agree w/ FJT if you are going to the dealer anyway.I have tried to find them online also and have been unable to. Good luck and enjoy your X.
