2002 X Type 3.0 blue smoke on startup?
Hi,My 1st post here and I am asking for help. lease excuse me for doing this. I have this 2002 that after sitting for a day or 2 will smoke some when starting it. It is blue smoke and it won't make you cough but it is noticeable. Have any of you seen this problem? I thought maybe valvve seals are getting bad. When you look at AllData it says it takes 10.4 hours to do this on my car. When you look at engine though it looks like you have to pull the cams to get to valve seals and pulling the cams is over 20 hrs to do. Am I missing something about changing these seals or better yet is there something else that could be wrong to cause the car to smoke after sitting for a couple of days? It will only smoke for approx 15-20 seconds but it is noticeable. I appreciate any help you could give me with my car. Otherwise I really have not had any problems with it,but I am a mechanic by trade. I keep up with the maintenance. Thanking you in advance.

I am pretty sure that if the car only smokes for a little bit after sitting then it is the valve seals. If you let the car idle for 15 mins then take off, do you get the same blue puff of smoke? If so then it is probably the valve seals.
I can't see removing the cams taking more than 6 hours. The whole job can probably be done in a day by an experienced tech, or over a weekend by a mechanically inclined person.

RE: 2002 X Type 3.0 blue smoke on startup?
The dealer said the early 2002's had a bad PCV value which caused the smoking and changing the PCV value did solve 90% of the problem but sometimes mine will still smoke after sitting a shorter time, like 1 hour but after sitting overnight, it doesn't smoke.
Did you find out any more information. Is it the valve seal?
Thanks,

I was gonna say about the PCV valve. 2002 had bad ones, but it was more of a huge cloud of smoke when you took off. I remember changing one and filled up the whole street with smoke when I went driving it because of all the oil in the intake manifold....lol
