2002 X-Type For First Jaguar?
Hello,
I'm from Chesterfield, VA and I'm new to the forum and to Jaguar. As a matter of fact I'm looking at purchasing my first one. Not knowing a lot about Jaguar I feel joining this forum will be very helpful.
Just like every car there are thousands of reviews that can be read. I need help from you guys, the experts.
The car I'm looking at is a 2002 X-Type 3.0 with 98,000 miles for $2500. Plan on 80% in town driving. Other than the typical things to look for when buying a used car, is there anything special with the X-Type? Can I give it serious consideration or should I turn and run? Not from Jaguar, but this model LOL.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks, Mike

Hi Mike,
Looks like a nice car and in decent condition from the pictures.
It's only within the last year I got in on the Jaguar scene, but here's what I've learned so far:
It's a buyers market. There not a whole load of X-types about, but as a buyer, you should make sure you get the one you want from those available. Decide on the color and options you need and you should be able to find it and can probably negotiate on the price.
Look for a car with history that has been maintained and looked after.
For $2500, you can probably get a newer year of X-type for the same money. From what I gather from my research while looking for a Jaguar, there were some modifications Jaguar made to the X-type from the '02 & '03 era cars to improve reliability. If you can find from from '06 on, you'll get a face lift too!
One last thought, as you mention about using it mostly for around town is that the MPG won't be anything remarkable. I think I'm averaging 16 MPG in town (Boston) with my 3.0 automatic X-type.
All the best in your hunt for the right car.

If you are looking for a car to play with and zoom from light to light with, then the X-Type is probably not the best car to have. In the past, it has suffered from a weak transfer case. Most of these should be off the road now, but that is not a 100% certain. If you want something for cruising say I-95, then the X-Type is going to do what you are after in comfort. I used to live in Norfolk and now live in Southern Maryland. So, I know the fun that you face driving.
You will like the 3.0L as it has lots of low end grunt and passing people just requires easing into the gas and letting the car accelerate. It will not need to downshift to get around unless you want it done now.
After that, it is the normal problems that the X-Type is known for (vacuum leaks, transfer case noise, and e-brake/rear suspension issues). Most of these are pretty easy to take care of.
If you are after something to go light to light, then I would look into the S-Type or the XJ. They are going to be slightly more, but, will handle the abuse much better.

Hi Mike!
Welcome to Jaguars, I bought my 2002 x type about a year ago, like the
quick response of these cars when you need it.
I had some issues with my 2002, it needed a new starter the solonoid
went on it but with 66k miles on mine that can be expected.
Installed it without too much trouble.
I was lucky that the inside of the interior looks like new.
Let me know if you need some help any time.
I also have a 78 XJ6 ser. 2 that keeps me busy sometimes, bought
that new and has 130k miles on it, but is in good shape.

For the price it is a great car. Looks wise I get a ton of compliments. Reliability wise, my mechanic has clients who's X-Types have lasted more than 200k miles w/o major repairs. However, as with any older cars there are the usual repairs. I was able to do most of these minor repairs myself, with the help of this forum. I have never worked on cars before.
Good luck!
Good luck!
