2003 2.5 Over Heating
We have a 2003 X Type 2.5L. About a month ago my wife came home with coolant running out from the bottom of her car. I had the car towed to our local Ford dealership, "no jag dealers in Fargo". The technition said that a hose that is connected to the thermostat was off and he reconnected it. So I left the dealership and with the AC on the car started overheating again. So I took it back and they bleed the air out of the coolant system. All was fine for about two weeks and now it overheats when the AC is on, and you are stopped at more that 2 stop lights. If you dont have the AC on it doesnt overheat at all. So I have called the dealer and they say it has to be the thermostat. But when I open the hood and turn on the AC and let it run, the fans dont come on. I thought that the fans should come on immediatly when the AC is turned on. Can someone tell me why they think the fans are notcoming on or if this could really be the thermostat? Thank you

keep in mind that you should not rely on the temp gauge to decide how the engine temp is.
The dumb *** engineers programmed the temp gauge so it basically only works as a warning lamp.
the needle is programmed to stay in the middle as long as the temp is in a normal range. WHen the temp reaches a certain limit, the needle jumps to a too hot reading.
You cannot possibly tell how fast the temp is rising. By the time the gauge moves, it is already too hot and there is no action to take except for stopping the car.

OK so the thermostat is a known problem on the X-type and it may need changing. It is not expensive and I would certainly change it. you need to get the Ford dealer to call a Jag dealer or their tech's line and get the actual procedure for changing coolant faxed to the dealership - dont mess around with this, heat kills.

I have had the thermostat replaced and the system purged and the ford dealership is telling me that it is still overheating. they say that the fans are not coming on and they dont know why. Does any one have any ideas on why the fans dont come on at all... Thankyou.

I've got the same problem and in my case it is the fan control module. This is a pricey fix because you have to replace the complete assembly, called fan shroud assembly. New shrould, fans and control module. Also requires wiring harness adaptor, called link lead, to adapt new assembly to our wiring. Cheapest I've found is $316 for assembly, $77 for harness with free shipping. In the mean time I have wired in a manual switch to turn fans on when needed.

Appearently Jag has changed something to require the adapter. I don't know what that might be because I haven't seen one yet. But I've been told by everyone I've contacted that when Jag quit supplying the control module seperately that the new shroud assembly requires the adapter and it is only sold seperately.
Because of the cost which I don't want to spend right now, I'm using my jury rigged switch which is working. Just a pain in the rear, especially if I forget to turn the fans on when needed.
