2004 Rear brake problem?
A person was road testing the 2004 I have for sale. About eight miles from my house the right rear brake started to squeal so we turned around and headed back to my house. On the way back he tried pulling the emergency brake lever and said the caliper must be seized because the lever was tight. Of course when we got back, you couldn't touch the wheel because it was so hot. The next day I jacked up the car and the wheel spun freely. I released the cable from the e-brake caliper lever and the lever sprung back and moved freely back and forth. I could move the cable in and out of it's sleeve so that wasn't stuck. My feeling is that he had applied the e-brake and didn't release it before we left and then when he said the e-brake lever was tight he was actually releasing it and was hoping I didn't realize what he had done. Has anyone had a caliper lock up and release on it's own? The car hadn't been used for about three months but I had put about 50 miles on it the week before this happened. He said these cars are known to have rear caliper problems if the car sits too long. Anyone else heard of this? Of course now I have to replace the rotor and will replace both calipers and pads just to make sure this doesn't happen again while I'm trying to sell it!
