decibel, if the freon system was broken into, then you have to evacuate (ie, draw a vacuum) on the A/C system before putting freon in it. If you do not evacuate the system, best case you will have a system that will operate very inefficiently and only give you slightly cool air when you need it to be ice cold. This can also lead to failure of the internal components (ie, rusting of the condensor, water making it into the compressor leading to its failure, etc).
Not trying to scare you, but there are some things that there is a reason for why they are done a certain way.

You can do it yourself, but you need to have the equipment to do it, most importantly the vacuum pump to evacuate the system as Chris mentioned.
I live in Phoenix and can rent these easily from Autozone, I beleive they are not so readily available in other areas. YMMV
