2005 X-type needs new CA CARB cats

Hi, I have owned my 2005 X-type 3.0 wagon forever. And it’s a great car. A tree fell on it during the CA Storms. It broke the tree. No joke, the headlight cover came off (glued back on) and it has a dent in the hood that can be pulled out. That was 1/4 cord of premium oak firewood….. Anyway…..
Long story short. I got the ‘left bank lean code’ and had someone go through the car completely. It needs a front cat part C2G2094, which is no longer made and I’m having trouble locating. Actually, the Jag guy and the exhaust guy are both looking. The rear is ‘marginal’ and likely needs replacing as well C2S37066, which is $1600 from the dealer in Monterey.
Can anyone help me find CARB compliant cats for this car that don’t total $3k? Or just find a front cat? It needs to pass smog to get tags. There’s zero else wrong with the car and it just had its 100k service. It’s ski season and I’m stuck in my husband’s truck. Please help.

Heather, something you may want to consider is possibly running a can of Seafoam thorugh the intake. What you would end up doing is getting the engine up to temp and then connecting a hose to the intake (most normally use the line going to the brake booster). You start the car and then you suck about half a can of the Seafoam straight into the intake. Yes, this is going to cause the car to run like hell. But, keep your foot in the gas. As you get to about 1/3 of the can gone, you let the car die. It will suck down a little more to about a half can. Let the car sit for 10 minutes or so to give the Seafoam a chance to work. You then clamp off the hose and start the car again (going to be hard to start), then suck down the second half of the can (use the gas pedal to keep the car running). Once the can is empty. pinch the line closed and get the car to the point that it will idle on its own. You can then remove the line goign to the Seafoam and put the brake booster line back in. From here, take the car out for some high engine runs. Use the J-Gate and put the car into say second gear and then go from barely rolling to near red line a few times. do some hard up hill pulls if you can (ie, start at the bottom of a long hill up at a slow speed and try to get to the top as fast as you can (safely of course). What you are looking to do is get the exhaust nice and hot. This will help clear out the cats and may buy you some time.
WIth this being said, when you put in the Seafoam, the car may smoke (may be quite a bit). So, doing this in a populated neighborhood may not be the best idea. Some cars barely smoke, some smoke like you wouldn't believe. But ,most people say that they feel a difference after doing this which is indicating that it cleared up the cat some. Otherwise, looking like John B has the best path forward for you. Most parts made these days are going to meet the CARB requirements.

I bought some pacesetter cats (with head pipes) from rock auto for my 06 STR and I have been getting catalytic efficiency codes P0420 and P0430 ever since. I’m not sure if I trust those cheap catalytic converter’s anymore.
i’m not sure I quite understand why they are having you change the catalytic converter‘s if you had throwing codes for a lean mixture since the fuel mixture is measured off the O2 sensor before the catalytic converter. You would have to be throwing codes like mine for P0420 or P0430, to point towards a bad cats. those are the cat efficiency codes

This is an interesting point. In order to pass CA CARB - they have to have the special CA serial number on them. The mechanic friend I took it to said not to trust the cheap cats either. He has seen more than his share of them not passing smog. But it’s the front cat that has to be replaced and that is no longer available from Jag.

According to the CARB database the only approved direct fit is the Magnaflow 4481902 which is currently not available.
There are several universal ones from Valina that are CARB approved for the 05 X-type:
105020, 105030, 105040, 113020, 113030, 113040
Not sure what the best one is and some models comes in different sizes, for example 105030 comes in 5.5", 8" and 12".
