2006 X-Type Backup Sensor
I'm not sure if someone has already posted a thread about this as I tired to search for it but was unable to find anything.
When I turn the vehicle on, I get a solid tone from the Backup Sensor that lasts a few seconds. When that happens the sensors do not work when in reverse. Is that a bad sensor, or even a faulty control unit. How would I go about troubleshooting it?
This is my first time here.
Thanks.

Harry, what I would tell you to do is to set the e-brake very firmly and then turn the key to the RUN position (do not start the engine). Now, shift the car to Reverse (may want to consider blocking the wheels too just for added security). You should get the solid tone like you mentioned and then have it go away. Get out of the car and put your ear next to each of the back up sensors (little round pieces on the bottom edge of the rear bumper). You should hear a high pitch chirp/squeal. Listen to each sensor and I bet you will find that 3 of them will be chirping/squealing and 1 will not. The one that is silent is your problem. Replace and all should be good. If all 4 are not making any noise, then you are looking at a control module issue.

harry, two things to note. When buying the sensors (assuming that is your problem), there are 2 different sensors on the back of your car. The real difference is whether the sensor has a straight attachment to it or whether the sensor is bent at a 90 degree angle. When you look at the sensors, this will make a lot more sense. Also, when removing the sensor, if you pull on the sensor to remove it, odds are it is going to break up into little pieces. What you need to do is to take a small flat blade screw driver and stick it under the tabs that are holding the sensor in place and then push the sensor from the outside into the car. This will save you a lot of hassle of trying to push small pieces around. A lot of times you can wiggle the sensor just enough that the clip will remain undone till you can get the other tab released.
