Hey everyone,
I have a 2007 Jaguar X-type 3.0 and yesterday something interesting happened, i was driving down the highway at 65mph and had all my windows down and all of a sudden i heard a cracking noise for a second and then it went away. My first thoughts were that it was my front defrost vents making a noise like they normally do when i go over a big bump or my windows making a adjustment noise since they haven't been open for some time. But then when i pulled into the place were i was going and sat in the car for a min or two, and i hit the brake pedal quite hard and all of sudden my RPMs went down to 400..and then went back up to normal idle and did that three times or so. Then that made me start to think that wasn't just a noise...Any ideas of what it could of been? I drove it today and it seemed to idle fine but run more ruff than normal but i think that it might just be my imagination since i haven't driven the car for some time and no warning lights or things of that kind have turned on..so I'm not really sure if i should be concerned?

XKR, just to ask a related question, do you feel like the car is a little harder to brake now? Ie, does it seem like you have to press on the brake pedal a little harder than you used to have to? From what I can tell, it almost sounds like the diaphram inside the brake booster failed and the noise you heard was the vacuum going through the hole and now when you step on the brake, you are essentially dumping the vacuum in the intake through the brake booster.

Is the car dangerous to drive, not if that is the problem. The only thing I would caution you on is that I would not tailgate anyone because you are not going to have quite the braking ability as you normally do. But, if you have even a semi-strong leg, you will be able to more than adequately apply enough force to the brake pedal to make the car stop really fast. Just will require a bit more leg to put into it.

 

My breaks actually feel fine and I don't think that's it. Thanks for the thought.
