sdettra, depends on what is wrong. From the sounds of things, you have a wheel that has a failed speed sensor (most common problem). So, it is possible that the ABS will still work, but the DSC may not as it is most likely seeing a wheel that is already "not spinning" (it actually is spinning, but the electronics are not seeing it spin).
The car will always be in AWD. It is more a matter of how the DSC will work. Keep things under control and you should be good.

side note with this question...
is the AWD electronically controlled? as in.. can i wire in a switch to make it 2wd like the subarus??
i have the DSC/ABS light on also... the ABS pump kicks in at low speeds until you hit 40+ and the computer sees that its a malfunction.. before then, its thinking a wheel is locked up or something....
whats the price of the abs fix???

yamaha, the transfer case is all mechanical. It doesn't shift power around like other cases do. It is pretty much locked into a 40/60 power split front to rear (40% to the front, 60% to the rear). Other cases have an electronic clutch in them that allows the amount of power transfer to vary. The DSC works by simply electronically applying the brakes to a specific wheel (the one that is slipping), independent of the driver. It also works on limiting the power output of the engine to help minimize slippage too.
As for the cost of the fix, I would need to know whether it is a front wheel that is your issue or a rear wheel. It can cost you $20 if you can do the work yourself, it can cost you up near $1000 to have a shop fix it. MOre information is needed before a solid answer can be given.

Im a mechanic, state inspector. And bodyman lol. Im test driving an 02, needs a clock spring for sure, and a wheel speed sensor. Im getting abs light, abs kicking on at low speeds before the light comes on... Dsc light for I assume the same reason. And "cruise not avaliable" probably because of the clock spring.... What do you think?

yamaha, you are probably getting both lights for the same problem. If the car can not trust the vehicle speed input (ie, one of the wheel speed sensors is toast), it can disable the cruise since it uses the speed sensors to maintain speed. I say to put the instrument cluster into the diagnostic mode and see what the codes are (if you need help with this, let me know, it is easy to do). From there, you can narrow things down to a specific wheel. I feel that you will fix both issues with the new speed sensor.
Granted, it is possible that the clockspring can affect the cruise. But, normally that will just cause it not to be able to engage at all as all the cruise buttons use the same 2 wires to do all the functions. It is just adding a different value resistor in series to let the computer know what function is being selected. if you want me to go into more detail about this, let me know.

Mark, sit in the driver's seat and raise your left hand to the turn signal stalk. On the end of it is the TRIP button. Depress and hold this button. With the button depressed, turn the ignition key to the RUN position (you can start the engine or not, doesn't matter) and be watching the message center display (the screen at the bottom of the speedo). Once the message center says "TEST" or "ENGINEERING TEST" or something to that effect, release the TRIP button. From there, you can push the TRIP button and scroll through to find the data that you are after.
When you are done looking, to exit the test mode, you can either simply turn the car off or depress the TRIP button for roughly 3 seconds and that will restore the cluster.
