Tem, you are low on freon. I know it sounds silly, but get your freon system checked and they will probably end up putting some freon into the car. We have seen this before.

Tem, when the A/C goes hot, is it shortly after coming to a stop? Or, does it happen when you are cruising at a constant speed and just randomly does it?

it seems to do it randomly at various speeds. it also seems to not cool down the car when it is especially hoy outside. the passenger side middle vent seems to be the only one that blows cold air all the time. So what i do is close the other vents and then that vent attempts to cool down the car then if i open the other vents they start to cool down but only intermittently. this is a very odd issue.

I appreciate your help very much as this is driving me crazy

Tem, yes, this is normal. That is the high pressure side equalizing out. Keep in mind that the A/C system can run upwards of 600 psi. So, the noise you are hearing is just the freon boiling off to equalize pressure.
