Without any fender modifications whatsoever and wanting to run the same width wheel on all four corners, I would say the largest you can go without rubbing is a 20x8.5 40-50mm offset and 235/30/20 tires.
After 11 sets of wheels on my X-Type in 2 years, I speak from experience...
My build thread with 9 of the wheels shown for your reference:

Nope. As long as you stick with 8.5" or narrower wheels and high offsets greater than 40mm, tires 235 or less (the guy above has massive 245s, but I wouldn't take that chance in front with a lowered car, rear would be fine with proper offset) with 30 series (not 35), you won't rub. These are very close to factory overall diameter specs (stock is 25.1 inches, these would be 25.5 inches overall diameter).

Offset is different (German concept) from backspacing (American concept). Higher offset means the wheels will sit further in the fender wells, so your wheels with a 40mm offset would give you 5mm more clearance from your fender lips and where you are rubbing. Offset is the distance from the center point of the wheel's width. In your case it means the mounting surface is 35mm outside from the center.
