Air Bag Clock Spring
Hi there is just purchased a nice 2004 x-type from the USA, after driving the car I noticed that the steering is not centered and that the car will turn to the right more than the left. I have 20 years experience as a general mechanic. In this case I never been in this position because I knew enough to lock the steering wheel in the center position before I remove or play with the rack and pinion so that I would not break the clock spring. I just looked at the service manual that I have got on cd and they do not mention any reference point for the center position of the clock spring? Would there be safe way of adjusting the steering shaft without removing the steering wheel? And if I remove the steering wheel and the clock spring is there a way to tell where the center is on the clock spring.
Thanks

RE: Air Bag Clock Spring
There is an arrow on the spring which would be 12 o'clock position. If you remove air bad andthen steering wheel, take off clockspring, turn it gently all the way left then all the way right then back half asmany turns. I think it is 2 1/2 full turns. Pm lastsixof vin and I will see if rack rebuild was done. Could be part of problem. Have you tried to just align it first though?
