Alcantara Suede Headliner? Purr...
Hey Guys/Gals
I wanted to know if anyone has changed the headliner to alcantara suede fabric ? My friend lent me his M5 for a few days and love the headliner.
I have the black interior and wanted to get the headliner and pilars done in black alcantara suede. My guy told me he can do it for $600 real suede.
I can get real black alcantara suede for $70 a yard from Italy, Is 4 yards enough?
You think its a hard job for the DIY'er? Anyone with headliner installer experience want to help a fellow jag owner some tips or suggestions?
-Thanks for the input!

Thanks for the Confidence and Inspiration, if that was meant.
Not being a VW, nor plaid (as its a different fabric), I was wondering if anyone has done this to their "X type."
Techniques on how to, tricks of the trade, thanks ahead of time.
Didn't really need the "If I can walk, you should be able to also" attitude though.

just saying it is definitely doable. the hard part is often getting the headliner out and having enough room to sprayglue both the fabric and the headliner. the a pillars will be easy and the sun visors slightly more challenging.

^ this is the process. Leaving overhang is key so you can wrap the edges. Repeat for A-pillars and you might want to spray dye the visors (vinyl paint usually works pretty good if you dislike the contrast, but the contrast may be good if you keep the sunroof piece as-is.

If you are looking to get the headliner out of the car, this is not an easy feat as the headliner is installed in the car prior to the windshield. So, without folding the headliner into half, there is no easy way to get the headliner out of the car. If you can do it with the headliner installed in the car, then not a problem. But, doing it this way will involve pulling all of the pillar pieces off and then going after the headliner this way.
As for the pillar pieces, if you are doing the headliner with the car inside the vehicle, then the pillar pieces will be a piece of cake.
The actual application of the headliner material is easy. The big thing I would recommend having is a second person there with you as you will be attempting to handle a large piece of material. WIthout the extra hands, the likelihood of getting a ripple in the material will be greatly increased.

The 2006 Portfolio has an Alcantara headliner. If you are looking to change the headliner why not go to leather like the 2011 Supersport. I have a leather headliner on my hardtop, as well as the A posts & header panel. The hardest part is the visors I had to have them hand stitched. I have to say I would never attempt to do the headliner or other trim panels myself out of fear it would not come out perfect. The nice thing about trim shops is they charge far less than you might expect. Good luck you will be very happy when it is done.
